AZ-Sen. 2010: Fred Thompson endorses John McCain (Fred lavishes praise on RINO McCain)
The Phoenix Business Journal ^ | 2010-02-15

Posted on 02/17/2010 7:33:31 PM PST by rabscuttle385

U.S. Sen. John McCain has picked up the endorsement of former actor and Sen. Fred Thompson while opponent J.D. Hayworth gets ready for an event with Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas and State Sen. Russell Pearce.

Hayworth and McCain, seeking a fifth term, are battling in the Republican Senate primary this year.

Thompson — a former senator from Tennessee and actor on the “Law & Order” television show — announced his endorsement Wednesday. McCain and Thompson both ran for president in 2008.

“I’m for John McCain. I hope he gets re-elected. I’ll help him get re-elected if I can. It’s more important for me, and I believe for the country, to have McCain’s leadership and the respect that he brings to bear on an issue. When he takes the floor on a national security matter. When he takes the floor and leads the intellectual effort the for the surge. When, without his efforts, I don’t think we would have ever had a surge and therefore we would never have had a victory in Iraq,” Thompson said.

Hayworth, Thomas and Pearce will appear together Feb. 24 in Tempe. Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio also backs Hayworth over long-time foe McCain.

I agree with you—TARP is a huge litmus test for me. Good on Hayworth.

“Why not? He has always been a big McCain guy, always.”

Fred was a major factor pushing through McCain’s campaign finance reform, and said he didn’t regret it.

That all being said, I told all the Fredheads I’d vote for him if he won the race. I couldn’t do that for McCain or Mitt. And I didn’t. But yeah, for some reason McCain seems to be cashing in alot of chits for his re-election. Grrrrr.

“I warned everyone here about Fred Thompson a long time ago, and mainly all it got me was abuse.”

Same here.

Now will someone wake me up when folks STOP making excuses for Palin.

Romney, Huckabee and Palin’s endorsements draw more fire because the three of them are presumed candidates for 2012. Thompson is not.

Whew. Not that I am worried about his viability as a candidate...that would be disillusioning for me. Thanks for the insight.

I’m still pissed how the GOP “leaders” in the House crumpled like a bad suit.

No one wanted to remember that Fred was campaign co-chairman for John McCain, like so many other things that SHOULD have been considered. Some ties do matter. Some associations DO mean something.

“In the 2000 Republican presidential primaries, Thompson backed former Tennessee Gov. Lamar Alexander, who eventually succeeded Thompson in the Senate two years later. When Alexander dropped out, Thompson endorsed Senator John McCain’s bid and became his national co-chairman.”

They are scum (and I haven’t forgotten their behavior in the Scozzafava race, either—Pence being the sole good guy in that group).

I don’t think the GOP “leaders” crumpled, though—I think they love the idea of throwing more of OUR money at potential campaign donors and fellow cocktail party circuit chums...they just know they have to pay a little initial lip service to spending restraint to dupe all of us yahoos outside the beltway.

I’d say that perhaps what needs to happen is for Tea Parties to rise up in protest AGAINST McCain....but there would be plenty of Tea Partiers with conflicts of interests.

“I don’t know how Hayworth became the 2nd coming of Reagan for this group.

“You also made this ridiculous unsupportable statement. It looks for all the world like an attempt to marginalize JD’s supporters while minimizing McCain’s negatives with a statement so milquetoast that it makes him seem normal in comparison to the former. “

Looks like? An attempt to marginalize us and a better candidate is exactly what it is. That duck is walking the walk. Such retorts are typical of those who have fought all of us who have wanted to see illegal immigration and the border controlled and dared disagree with John McCain or George Bush.

That sad tune has been playing for 10 years around here.

Ah the memories of the Fred wars. I think we were outnumbered just a bit, especially after about 10 Duncanistas were shown the door.
