Navy Adm. Michael Mullen, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, was nearing the end of a 25-minute question-and-answer session with troops serving here when he raised a topic of his own: "No one's asked me about 'don't ask, don't tell,' " he said.
As it turned out, none of the two dozen or so men or women who met with Mullen at Marine House in the Jordanian capital Tuesday had any questions on the 17-year-old policy that bars gays and lesbians from serving openly in the military - or Mullen's public advocacy of its repeal.
Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Darryl E. Robinson, who's the operations coordinator for defense attache's office at the U.S. Embassy here, explained why after the session. "The U.S. military was always at the forefront of social change," he said. "We didn't wait for laws to change."
Some Republicans in Congress have expressed outrage at repealing the ban in wartime and the Pentagon has embarked on a yearlong study on what impact the repeal might have.
At a Senate hearing earlier this month, Sen. John McCain R-Ariz., urged Mullen and Defense Secretary Robert Gates to "keep the impact it will have on our forces firmly in mind."
Yet those gathered at Marine House made it clear they've already accepted the idea of gays and lesbians serving among them.
Of far more interest to them were other areas, they told Mullen, such as allowing women to serve in infantry units. They also asked about relations between the military and the State Department and, more narrowly, when a key Defense Department official would be assigned to Amman permanently.

Military members are outraged over this, and yet they don't even have the freedom to speak out against the pushing of homosexuality.
Mullen used to support the "Don't Ask" policy, and he changed 180 degrees under Obama.
The previous Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, General Pace (USMC) was basically fired early. Why?
In 2007, General Pace called homosexual acts immoral.
General Pace: 'Homosexual acts are immoral'
Democrats in Congress and the MSM wanted his scalp, and they got it.
He should have know better. It didn't do any good. Evil never rests.
Pace was forced to "apologize", and then he was removed from CJCS before his term as Chairman was to expire.
Adm Mullen is playing politics, securing his own skin, and forcing this abomination on the military.
It is disgraceful.
Talked to my brother in Iraq today and he said he didn’t care.
(But he’s a moron anyway.)
He should have stuck to his guns and resigned with honor.
God's word was with him.
Now, we have Mullen/Gates/Obama, who think they are God, and dictating what people "really want."
Right!
If one gets to the top of the military chain and can’t get the balls to say no.......we’re in a heap of trouble.
Retire with honor,Mullen!!!!!
Mullen is a lying SOB. Get the hell out of our military!
Yeah, they were real honest and vocal on the PC issue of Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, too.
That worked out so well....
The more stars on the shoulder, the higher the head goes in the clouds.
More likely Mullen is gradually “coming out” and sees the benefits of being a General grade officer cruising among the lower ranks.
It’s like “who wants to be the goat and open his yap about this first?” This proves squat.
There would be cross-rank fraternization problems here, no?
Of course, but he probably figures that with gay behavior being just recently accepted he’d be safe from prosecution for a year or so ~ then he’d retire. In the meantime think of the little friends he would have made. Those relationships and a bucket or two of viagra and he’d be set for life.
If he only knew. Messing around with other gays is like messing around with schizophrenic, rabid cats. The blowback could kill him.
A boy is a Scout, attends church. does good in school, grows up, joins the Army, and the C.I.C. says to him, ‘’It’s yer night in the barrel troop’’ and that’s straight from the Whitehouse.
Personally think this great for recruiting. Just Not OUR soldiers, however. . .
Will we have a draft by 2012? A military MO that Obama wants, of course.
As much as most conservatives respect the military, the top brass serving in DC are mostly political whores. They are there to support the administration in power in most instances. Recall the recent statements by the thoroughly PC indoctrinated General Casey when he said that losing “our diversity would be worse” than the Fort Hood massacre.
These ass kissers are not the ones to ask about the DA, DT policy and what the rank and file troops and sailors think of it.
That’s scary to know that Mullen coward down to Obama’s wishes for fear of being fired. What’s next...he cowards down when Obama gives the order for martial law on the American people?
Imagine you are in a war zone and you had a dangerously stressful day...you go back to your living quarters to unwind and get a nice relaxing shower....only now you are not relaxing because someone is gazing at you....TERRIBLE IDEA.
Mullen is a Red China arse kisser and hates Taiwan. He’s a coward.
It’s going to be an epidemic of cover ups of sexual assaults in the military under the banner of pro gay hate crime stuff. Militaries will be perverted and discipline will go out the window.
There was an item on the news last week that only a tiny percentage (I think they said 0.3%) of discharges from the military are a result of “don’t ask don’t tell” violations.
Living in in close, crowded quarters day in and day out with guys that eat with their mouth open and other guys that pick their nose and still others that smell like sh&t can drive anyone a little bit neurotic. All you need to go over the edge is someone staring at you with his tongue hanging out when you’re sitting on the pot.
On the other hand, you read anecdotal accounts about some medic or whatever in Iraq who is generally known to be queer, everyone is glad to have him around because he’s good at his job and has saved lives. Presumably he takes pains to keep his sex life to himself.
So in the final analysis, it would seem that “don’t ask don’t tell” is working. But the military still has to keep the “don’t ask don’t tell weapon” because openly gay activity on base and around barracks will devestate morale and will be the end of our well trained volunteer army.
So who’s rocking the boat? The top staff is almost certainly under pressure from the administration which desperately wants to please the anti - military left. As an added bonus it must send a thrill up legs of the characters in the present White House to be doing the same thing to the military that they have done to the economy.
It’s fine for the U.S. military to adapt, as long as this is in the best interest of its mission. But it should not be in the business of being “at the forefront of social change.”
