Fox News analyst Bob Beckel today criticized Vice President Joe Biden for wearing ashes on TV; today is Ash Wednesday and Biden is Catholic.
In the middle of a discussion on President Obamas stimulus plan, Beckel gratuitously said, Sorry about laughing, but I looked at Joe Bidens forehead, and I know it is Ash Wednesday, but Im not sure I would wear that ash on the air. Anyway .
Catholic League president Bill Donohue wasnt amused:
Bob Beckels admonishing remark, Im not sure I would wear that ash on the air, makes us wonder whether it is the public display of ashes he finds risible, or the religion that sports them.
In any event, there is no record of Beckel ever lecturing a Jew about wearing a yarmulke on TV or a Muslim wearing a turban. Must be something about Catholicism that bothers this guy. Wed love to know what it is. At the very least, a clarification about what he meant is in order.
An apology is owed Biden. Period.
He nicked the roach he was finished smoking with Kerry.
I thought maybe his plugs overheated.
Even a non-Catholic can be marked with ashes at a Catholic Ash Wednesday liturgy, just not recieve the Eucharist.
*Biden’s a pseudo-Catholic so the ashes are perfectly acceptable.
And these people think they are the tolerant ones.
I don’t care if Plugs was doing it for show or is sincere.
Beckel should be ashamed of himself.
C’mon now, Blowhard Bob, don’t make me have to defend Ol’ Joe for having ashes on his forehead!
I would proudly defend Biden’s right to wear ashes on his forehead if he would proudly defend the lives of children in the womb. How can someone disavow a fairly fundamental belief of the church he is identifying with?
He indeed has the right.
I also have the right to believe that the fool is a corrupt, lying poser, 24-7.
That's the problem with a lot of these dems. They're "inside" the church when it's politically expedient, but outside the church when casting votes.
1. He was wearing them as a show of false piety.
or
2. He forgot to wash them off before going on TV.
3.He' a work in progress, just like the rest of us..
excluding you, or course!
Actually, he’s not entitled to wear ashes—because he’s a notorious, obstinate public sinner. Ashes are a sacramental, signifying participation in repentance for sin. And Biden is obstinately clinging to the sin of supporting the mass murder of babies. He has no right to pose as a practicing Catholic.
Beckel’s comments were just plain bigoted and ignorant.
I can remember when Bob Novak, Mark Shields (a pro-abortion Catholic), Margaret Carlson (a pro-abortion Catholic), and that woman from National Review whose name escapes me, were all on “Capital Gang” together, all of them with ashes.
I been all damn day ranting and raving over Biden and his ashes.
Come on!
First, at 10 am this morn I see him and sure enuff....ashes all over his fine Catholic forehead.
Then, today, 4pm....SAME ASHES!
My ashes don’t last much more than an hour, maybe a smidge left for more than an hour.
He’s got a mascara wand somewhere.
He did the same thing last year. This year I been joking with everyone in the choir....”keep an eye out for ole Joe...he’ll be wearing his ashes on Ash Wednesday.”
I’m from Delaware, btw, and I always ask the priest why they keep giving this abortion lover communion.
Always it’s a shrug.
Well hell, the Wilmington Dioscese is raising funds for a convicted child raping priest, as I recently learned.
BINGO!
If I was a Roman Catholic, I would be steamed that a a fake like Biden was purporting to be a Roman Catholic.
Seems I distictly remember Jesus distinctly warning against hypocrites who covered themselves in ashes and pretending to be pious (or somesuch).
Pro-abort corrupt Biden disgraces good, well-meaning Christians in the Roman Catholic Church by his fakery.
I'm with you on that!
Sorry no plugs in that head...perhaps a few faulty tubes
