NAPLES The Bush brothers packed the house at the Naples Grande Beach Resort.
Former President George W. Bush and his brother Jeb Bush, the former governor of Florida, spoke Tuesday night as part of the Naples Town Hall Distinguished Speakers Series. They talked issues _ everything from health care and the Iraq war to budget deficits and Social Security reform.
George W. Bush, the 43rd U.S. president, has stayed out of the spotlight, limiting his face-time in public since leaving the White House about a year ago.
He and his brother the states 43rd governor addressed a crowd of more than 1,000 who purchased tickets to see them. Tickets to hear the duo speak started at $200.
The brothers had the crowd laughing, clapping and sighing with heart-felt emotions as they showed their more personal side. A few times, George W. Bush fought tears as he talked about the support of his wife in the Oval Office and how his decisions to send more troops to Iraq hurt families in the U.S. who lost their sons, daughters, husbands and wives to the war.

(And I'll let you know when I get something up and running).
You are correct that I am loyal to President Bush, that I view him as a friend, and more importantly as a brother in Christ. I have far higher values than politics - and apparently these people don't.
Character, integrity, grace under fire, class, courage to defend this beloved nation when the whole world was screaming for him not to, deep faith and honor under the most dire of circumstances.
I just don't throw those things away easily. The President earned my respect, and he's going to keep it. (He's already doing amazing things as an ex-President).
The thing is, that the vast majority of conservatives, whether they consider Bush a conservative or not (part yes, part no), admire him for his character.
ohioWfan---this is a FINE piece of writing, as usual. You are very eloquent. I totally concur with you but couldn't have expressed it nearly as well.
I just get so sick of the false accusations, the gross misinterpretations, and the distortions of truth that continue to flow from the fingers of the Bush haters.
I am convinced that there are least some of these people who hate him because of his character, and not in spite of it.
As Dolly said upthread, the faith of George W. Bush brings out hatred in those who also hate the Savior he worships.
One thing we know is that hatred of a man of integrity, no matter what one's political views are, is not of the Lord.
And these people are drenched in hatred, fuming, steaming, vomiting hatred. As I said - not of the Lord, for sure.
Thank you, dear ohioWfan. I’m with dear LUVW. That person’s opinion is so outrageous, it’s meaningless to me.
I feel sorry for people eaten up with rage at a good, good man. What a waste.
Despite everything he accomplished, to date, there is no cure for extreme BDS, not even the election of Obama. Amazing, isn’t it?
They have transferred what should be rage at the stupid majority of American people electing Obama, the media's slobbering over him, lying for him, covering up, never once asking a difficult question, and turned it on President Bush.
Sometimes it's like living in the Twilight Zone. Or a "beam me up Scotty" scenario.
How do you twist logic that far? Bizarre.
I’m all for going after the ‘fossil incumbents’ in office, but gratuitous slams against President Bush are completely uncalled for and completely out of line. The man kept us safe and only his respect for the office he held, keeps him quiet now, so he isn’t out there defending himself, but thankfully VP Cheney *is* from time to time.
He’s beyond hope L. As you said, do not respond to anything he says now. If he keeps it up I will see what Jim has to say about it. Jim IS a real friend of mine.
One freeper said something about Bush bashing giving them a sense of identity. They ARE somebody because they're verbally beating up a good man, and millions of people who deeply respect him.
For some it may be some sort of club identity - some importance they lack in real life. Just guessing here, but whatever it is making them behave in such a manner is certainly puzzling.
As for dear VP Cheney, I LOVE the guy! If he were in better health, we wouldn't have had McCain and we wouldn't have Obama. That would have been sweet! :)
If I start responding would you smack me around, Nan? ;)
Yep. The only way to stop an argument is to ignore the idiots. They are generally not intelligent enough to understand common sense. Not worth the effort. We who hold our principles know who we are and God knows who we are. To me that is the only important thing. I leave the fools up to Him. And believe me, I’ve had a lot of fools sniping at me for a long time. I just let it roll off and it drives them crazy. Just think, when some idiot makes a stupid remark or attacks you for your opinion, it’s because he/she is trying to get a rise out of you. They hate it when they get no response. That is the beauty of this site. We have luxury of not responding. We don’t have to talk to them.
On the other hand, I will come to the defense of my friends when they are attacked. Me, I don’t care, but don’t diss my friends.
So true, and incredibly bizarre.
We know nothing of BHO--school records, what he did as editor of the Law Review, medical records, friends he grew up with, etc. No matter what you think of the controversy regarding his birth certificate, he could easily end all the discussion---but hasn't. He was a member for 20 years of a church that has a radical pastor but that is just ho-hum to them. We can go on and on.
BHO is destroying America and people still bash GWB. I believe it has much to do with GWB's faith in Christ---even though that is not the focus. I don't doubt that this is a spiritual battle.
One of my besetting sins is that I can't tolerate being falsely accused - by anyone, and especially by know-nothings and smart-mouthed adolescents who just make up horrific things out of whole cloth (as two have done on this thread). I feel like I need to set the record straight.
I really do need to leave these people in the Lord's hands, because I just keep taking them back from Him.
It is indeed, a flaw.
You are a GOOD friend, and I value you! Thank you!!
Well stated, by all of you!
BHO is the unknown and we are left to know him now, only by his deeds. I find that totally outrageous and I dare say, unconstitutional.
No doubt at all, dmd.
I could see it especially when I posted the Pray for President Bush thread for many years here. The demons were out in force on that thread, and actually that's one of the main reasons I took a "vacation." It was a spiritual decision, and a good one.
But I always remember that the battle belongs to the Lord. In the end, those who honor HIM will be honored, and I believe with all my heart that George W. Bush will be rewarded for his faithfulness to his Savior.
That’s nice, but I don’t trust Bushes.
