After Anti-Gay Cartoon, How Will Notre Dame Respond to Outcry? Posted: 02/16/2010 SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The University of Notre Dame's student newspaper made national headlines when it printed an anti-gay comic strip on Jan. 13. The backlash was vocal, intense and deserved -- the comic depicted one character asking another how to turn a "fruit" into a "vegetable." The response: "a baseball bat."
On campus, the response has also been adamant -- in support of the LGBT members of Notre Dame's student body, faculty and staff. And as a result of the incident, a group of students and faculty has launched several new initiatives.
The burgeoning movement on this Catholic campus comes at a time when the nation, too, is asking itself questions about the acceptance of gays and lesbians -- in the military, in churches and in city halls where same-sex couples seek the right to marry. While pivotal decisions are being made on the national level, at places like Notre Dame the path ahead still seems unclear.
First, full disclosure: I'm an editor at The Observer, the student paper that published the cartoon. As such, I've been a front-row witness to the trauma anti-gay hate speech can cause, but also to the encouraging response of the community following such a troubling incident.

“How Will Notre Dame Respond to Outcry?”
...circle jerk?
“fruit” into a “vegetable.” The response: “a baseball bat.”
True, or a blender.
What now gay means fruit?
Are they going to take all the words.
Sounds like a deliberate provocation to advance the gay agenda.
>> “fruit” into a “vegetable.” The response: “a baseball bat.”
Well, Notre Dame doesn’t seem to be too concerned with the value of Life these days. Still waiting for the joke about the unborn. /s
Am sure Notre Dame’s so-called leaders will do the politically correct thing and declare themselves and their faith evil and midieval and give themselves a good public whipping.
” Arguments have been made that Catholicism is not accepting of the LGBT community, but church teaching in this area is far more complex than most acknowledge.”
Passive voice used when one wishes to obscure the plain truth that the Catholic Church says that homosexuality is a sinful action, that efforts to push the idea that it is moral ought not to be bless by the school. As to Mullen, they forget that Pate—also a Catholic— opposed the idea and that his successor is pushing this only to please the new administration.
Seems like that to me also.
Some jokes have a mean edge -- but this 'joke' registered a zero on the chuckle meter...
So, opposing deviant behavior bad—here are some facts. Male homos are the #1 vector for the spread of diseases among humans and are a large and unnecessary public health threat. Male homosexuals have the highest incidence of HIV/AIDS, syphilis, drug-resistant gonorrhea, entamoeba histolytica, chlamydia, herpes simplex II, Chancroid, Drug Resistant TB, Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis non A & B, just to name a few. The press of course never discusses the CDC facts, but if you want to look for yourself the information is in the scientific literature. More than any other segment of society, the homosexuals are costing us billions in medical care. I dont want to pay expenses for smokers either, but at least they dont spread infectious agents. There is a notable homosexual group, consisting of thousands of members, known as the North American Man and Boy Love Association ( NAMBLA). This is a child molesting homosexual group whose cry is SEX BEFORE 8 BEFORE ITS TOO LATE. This group can be seen marching in most major homosexual parades across the United States. Homosexuals commit more than 40% of all reported child molestations in the United States, which, assuming homosexuals make up 2% of the population, means that 1 in 19 homosexuals is a child molester.
A baseball bat. That’s pretty good.
They’re just upset because mean-spirited jokes are never directed at conservatives.
That'd be my guess.
correction....acting on homosexual tendencies is sinful.
any human can be celibate if they desire it.
we should be careful how we judge one another.
Where o where is the article’s link to the underlying cartoon? For all I know, the cartoonist was DECRYING/ targeting those who would brutally beat a victim just for being gay (a “fruit”).
This is starting to remind me of the Danish Mohammed cartoons, how Yale U. Press wouldn’t reprint them in its book ABOUT the ‘toons, etc.
This HAD to be a setup. What idiot editor would ever permit such a disgusting cartoon promoting violence? Mark, my words, this was planned by radicals at Notre Dame.
I was surprised to learn that tomato(e)s aren’t a vegetable, but are actually a fruit.
Hope that isn’t controversial.
