Tom McClintock is a fine man and a true conservative but he had zero momentum going in to the election.

Bald faced assertion. Here is the data:

Here is the last USA Today/CNN/GALLUP poll before the recall.

"6. If the choice were between Cruz Bustamante, the Democrat and Tom McClintock, the Republican, who would you be more likely to vote for: Cruz Bustamante or Tom McClintock?"

September 25-27
Registered Voters

McClintock 49%
Bustamante 42%

Probable Voters

McClintock 56%
Bustamante 37%

I can’t argue with that. If the race was between Bustamante and McClintock, I would have voted for McClintock. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case. Please refer to question number 4 in the survey you cited. In the REAL race, with all contenders listed, McClintock was polling at 16-18%.
