House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is traveling with a handful of Democratic congressmen and one Republican on a trip to Haiti today, the speaker's office announced. A month after an enormous earthquake tore the country apart, the country of Haiti is still struggling to recover.
"In the spirit of President Obama, we go to demonstrate the ongoing American commitment to the Haitian people that they will not be forsaken or forgotten," Pelosi said in a statement.
She said it was critical for both Democrats and Republicans to take the opportunity to examine the reconstruction efforts in Haiti before Congress considers dedicating long-term assistance to the country. Immediately following the earthquake, President Obama committed $100 million in initial aid.
Along with assessing the American recovery efforts there, the delegation will meet with Haitian President Rene Preval and other government officials. They are scheduled to return later today. Those traveling with Pelosi incude Sens. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), Bill Nelson (D-Fla.), Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.), Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) and George LeMieux (R-Fla.), as well as Reps. John Conyers (D-Mich.), Charles Rangel (D-N.Y.), Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas), Earl Blumenauer (D-Ore.) and Virgin Islands Delegate Donna Christensen.
I thought she had already gone to Haiti? Maybe the Haitians will keep her.
The Pelosi definition of bipartisanship
FOXNews.com
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced Friday that she is leading a 12-member bipartisan congressional delegation to Haiti. The group includes one Republican outmatched by 11 Democrats.
Though Pelosis press release used the word bipartisan five times, Florida Sen. George LeMieux is the sole GOP lawmaker in Congress visiting the devastated island nation for what would presumably be a bipartisan cause assessing ways to help the country recover from its earthquake.

Oh, goodie.
Is she going to tax the survivors?
No surprise the token Republican on another needless junket is Charlie Crist’s hand picked placeholder.
I guess Pelosi wants one more drunken flying binge before Lent. (Yeah like she gives two craps about Lent.)
ROAD TRIP!
She can't ‘survey’ the situation from HER OFFICE?!
What the hell does she know about ‘rebuilding’ (or building) anything?!!!
Big fat waste of money that could be used instead to help the victims. How will she keep her makeup from melting?
LeMieux is getting right tight with that bunch! He must be working for his presidential hug!

Proof the dems just want to wear ANY Republican as a veneer for legitimacy.
Don’t be assholes, Republicans. Don’t be whores and let yourself be used by the democrats. You’re just giving them cover to say “The Republicans are with us, they’re doing it too.” No good can come of it.
Maybe she’ll sleep in one of the tents and eat rice while she’s there.
First earthquakes and floods...now pestilence...it all makes sense now.
Do the voodoo folk down there take requests ?
Photo op big time. Watch for pictures of them showing up around election time. “We care so much for our fellow humans”. Blech.
“She said it was critical for both Democrats and Republicans to take the opportunity to examine the reconstruction efforts in Haiti before Congress considers dedicating long-term assistance to the country”
Hey Nancy, turn on the news if you want to survey the damage...
Maybe the lone Republican will be there to be the GOP rep when the following ceremony occurs:
Bush to be honored by the Obama Administration
The Obama Administration will be honoring the 43rd President of the United States. It has asked the U. S. Board on Geographical Names to name the fault-line in the tectonic area beneath Haiti after him.
(Yes, there is such a board, created in 1890 and updated in 1947.)
The area will now officially be referred to as “Bush’s Fault”
(Not sure where the above came from except in an email I got today.)
