Bayh was a Hillary supporter. He was publicly ruled out by Obama when Biden was selected. He has been trying to move the democrats to the center for months.
Filing deadline is Friday, and you have to submit 5000 signatures. Dems are going to have to scramble to find a candidate. I am not sure they will be able to do so.
Bayh has $14 million dollars. He could sit on the sidelines and then challenge for Lugar’s seat. Or he could be a kingmaker. Or (and this wouldn’t surprise me) he could challenge Obama in the presidential primaries.
One thing, for sure. By waiting so long he has really shafted the Indiana democrats, the Senate democrats, and Obama. HA!

Deliberate shafting. Obama’s thugs cheated and stole the Indiana primary. Chicago ways don’t go over well with Hoosiers.

The best-case scenario for the Dems is that Bayh retires and sets off a mini-wave of other retirements.
The worst-case scenario is that he is setting himself up as a centrist alternative to Obama in 2012. If that’s the case, then a lame duck Bayh is going to create mayhem in the Senate.
I suspect that he’s walking away, but the next 2-3 months will be interesting. He can’t vote as a lame duck with the standard Reid-Pelosi agenda or he disqualifies himself for 2012. And moreover, he doesn’t really help himself by being a lone dissenter for the remainder of his term – he just looks disloyal to his own party. So … is there a chance that a centrist movement is afoot to buck the Party? Will a center coalition of Bayh-Nelson-Lincoln-et al now stand up to be counted?
If Bayh can recruit those folks to his side, I think he’ll do it. I just don’t see enough other Blue Dogs breaking ranks. I think at the end of the day that those Blue Dogs are really Lap Dogs.
But I’d love to be proven wrong.
Maybe Hillary got him to jump ship to publically derail Obama, working with her to set up a stalking horse challenge in 2012 to bobo, weaken bobo and then swoop in.
Hillary’s payback in 12 is to make sure as much damage as possible is inflicted on Obama’s administration in Nov. Bayh is a clintonite. maybe he’s been promised the vp slot from her, if he works with her.
Could be and I would like to think Evan had the countries beast interest at heart, but I know it has always been about Evan.
I smell scandal.
Rush doesn’t know about the deadline. He also doesn’t know that right now there is NO candidate. If they don’t get someone on the ballot for the primary, the Republican will run UNOPPOSED.
This is a BIG deal, and I can’t help but feel that this is a big old dose of payback for Obama.

VA went for BO too in 2008 - only to do a 20 point swing one year later and correct their mistake by electing all Republicans by wide margins. They learned that there are no moderate democrats; thats just a lie.

That was the deal in '08, a vp slot. No other reason, explains why bayh dropped his presidential bid then.
Evan has skeletons dancing in the closets and it is why he is controlled.
