4 F-22A stealth fighters fly to U.S. Kadena base in Okinawa

Four F-22A stealth fighters have flown to the U.S. Air Force's Kadena Air Base in Okinawa from Guam, base officers said Friday. The fighters arrived at Kadena on Thursday from Andersen Air Force Base on Guam.

The officers did not say why the fighters have flown to Kadena, but said they will leave Okinawa within a week.

The F-22A was developed jointly by Lockheed Martin Corp. and Boeing Co. It is a single-seat, twin-engine fighter designed to be difficult to detect by radar.

The U.S. Air Force temporarily deployed F-22 fighters to Kadena base on three occasions between 2007 and 2009.

The U.S. Defense Department has proposed not placing new orders for the aircraft, known as the F-22 Raptor, mainly because of its high cost.

Japan once regarded the F-22 as a key candidate for the Air Self- Defense Force's next mainstay fighter.

Hopefully the de-funding of the F-22 program is temporary, and things will change after Republicans score a huge victory in 2010. The future of the F-22 is still promising, “Our commitment to this aircraft is underscored by the 6 and-a half billion dollars provided over the next few years to upgrade the existing F-22 fleet to be fully mission-capable,” Defense Secretary Gates said last September. Obama’s plans can be quickly reverted in the next few years as long as we don’t fall behind in the development of the F-22.

If things heat up this week in the mid east, will they keep an eye on Taiwan?...when the cat’s away, the mice will play.

Unfortunately, it's very doubtful. Capping F-22 production at 187 aircraft started under Gates in the Bush administration, and with Gates continuing as SecDef for Zero, he's not about to change his mind.

Congress could slip in money to purchase a handful more each year, but that's doubtful even if the Repubs take back both houses this year.

Hope this goes better than the first deployment that got turned back because the fighter’s software could handle the international date line.

I just noticed the blast deflectors in that picture that are in front of the hangers and between the aircraft parking spot.
