Lebanese army fires on Israeli fighter planes

Lebanese anti-aircraft guns opened fire on four Israeli fighter planes which were violating its air space and flying at low altitude on Monday, the military said.

"The army's anti-aircraft guns fired at four enemy Israeli planes that had been overflying the (southern) area of Marjayoun this morning," an army spokesman said on condition of anonymity.

A media correspondent in southern Lebanon said about 70 rounds had targeted four Israeli planes.

While Lebanon's army publishes almost daily reports of Israeli violations of Lebanese air space, the military rarely opens fire unless the planes fly within range of its guns.

The Israeli infringements are a breach of UN Security Council Resolution 1701 which ended the devastating 2006 war between Israel and Lebanon's Hezbollah.

The war claimed the lives of more than 1,200 people in Lebanon, most of them civilians, and more than 160 Israelis, most of them soldiers.

Hezbollah, originally a resistance group formed to counter an Israeli occupation of south Lebanon, had forced the Israeli military out of Lebanon in 2000. Israel, however, continues to occupy the Lebanese Shabaa Farms.

I bet that if Lebanon ever quit firing missiles into Israel these “overflights” would quickly cease.

I agree. I support the overflights. They provide valuable intelligence on what is going on the ground. They can also locate and identify targets if war breaks out. I am willing to bet that Israeli special forces are inside Lebanon.

I guess Lebanon is in a rough spot but still it seems odd they would fire on Israeli planes yet tolerate Iranians and Syrians all over the country.

I can see next week’s headline already:

“Lebanon regrets firing on Israeli planes last week after being trounced like a narc at a biker rally.”

One thing we know for certain...Israel will swiftly retaliate. Are these imbeciles(Lebanon) gluttons for punishment, or what?

Any Israeli response will be billed as an unprovoked attack in the hate-Israel media.
