Newspapers' poll: Perry has comfortable lead as voting starts [TxGov]
American Statesman ^ | Feb. 13, 2010 | Jason Embry and Corrie MacLaggan

Gov. Rick Perry heads into the start of early voting Tuesday with a comfortable lead over his two Republican primary challengers, but he could be in for a tough November fight against the Democratic nominee, a poll commissioned by the Austin American-Statesman and other Texas newspapers shows.

Perry has the support of 45 percent of likely Republican primary voters, while 29 percent back U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison and 17 percent support Wharton activist Debra Medina. Just 8 percent are undecided.

The telephone survey was conducted Feb. 2-10, before Medina said important questions had been raised about whether the U.S. government aided in the Sept. 11 attacks on the World Trade Center. Medina later said she has never believed the government was involved, but her initial remarks could weaken her momentum.

In fact, Medina's comments could allow Perry to win more than 50 percent of the vote in the March 2 primary and avoid a runoff, said pollster Mickey Blum of Blum & Weprin Associates, which conducted the survey.

Usually, incumbents don't build support in the final weeks of an election, Blum said. But Perry could break the 50 percent threshold if Medina's comments cause her supporters to break toward Perry or stay home.

Never mind that Medina is not a Truther and clarified her statements.

If she wasn't or didn't believe the truther line all she had to do was disavow it with her answer. Instead she tried the politician's two step and got bit.

Medina has/had no chance in this election. Her protege Paul got just over 66,000 votes out of some 1.3 million cast in the primary back in 08. That group just doesn't ring true with most of Texas voters.

Her statement did not require clarification — it was, unfortunately, entirely clear. She has made further statements on other shows, and appearances on the Alex Jones Radio Show. She is apparently sympathetic to an anti-American propaganda movement, and is disqualified from holding any public office ... she is the anti-American equivalent of an individual that is withholding judgment on whether the Holocaust occurred.

Her “clarification” was a typical spin ... political damage control by a politician that came to the realization that she had committed suicide-by-interview.

She has lost my vote permanently and irrevocably, and I am thankful that Beck outed her before she had the opportunity to damage the credibility of the Tea Party movement.

No, but medina did sign the 10-4 tenth amentment pledge.

If she was a truther don,t you think there would be a little more evidence than a fumbled answer on beck?

>> on an issue that doesn’t even matter to a Governor

She gives credence to “questions” raised by an anti-American propaganda enemy movement. That information is relevant to ANY political office.

She might as well be a Holocaust-denier as far as I’m concerned.

"When Medina loses - will you support the GOP nominee?"

Only if the nominee is a conservative and at this point she's the only "conservative" I see. So... of the candidates running, if she loses, NO! And HELL NO!
I no longer will vote for the lesser of two evils. If the person vying for my vote does not wish to represent me and my values then he/she will not get my vote. PERIOD! I will write in my own name in the General election before I give it to one of the leftist stooges in either party. You see... I don't see voting for a communist just because he/she calls him/herself a Republican "MODERATE" a win for my country, my family or me.

If a liberal or a moderate win we all lose.

You know. As we all know God hates evil and I doubt many people on this forum would argue that progressives are not evil but so too are moderates. God says about those 'lukeware' (rancid, discusting, spineless, slimy little people) that He will spue them out of His mouth.
"I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth." Revelation 3:15-16

If God can't stand liberals and moderates why should I? Voting for a "moderate" is no different than voting for a "liberal". Proof? Just look at the legislation the two have worked to shove down our throats.

If the state of Texas votes in a dim gov in these times,

I don’t see that happening yet but don’t forget Texas is getting a huge influx of people coming into the state many of which won’t necessarily support the GOP line. Texas will get 3 or 4 new Congressional Districts after this census. In addition the State House is only GOP by a couple of members. So overall the tide seems to be pushing Texas over the line.

There was only one answer to that question NO.

Just the fact that she is of the mindset, no matter how peripheral, makes me believe she is not a serious thinker.

Absolutely he was. In fact he ran his presidential campaigns on how well he was able to bridge the gaps between Conservatives and Liberals. He was nothing less than a dirtbag moderate. He was a lesser of two evils that we were forced to vote for. NO MORE for me. If a conservative is not on the ticket I will write in my own name. If a conservative is not on the ticket there is no way for America or Texas to "win."

Texas will not elect a Democratic Governor this year unless Perry is found in bed (literally) with Kay Baby Hutchison or some other such scandal arises. But just standby. Illegal immigration (all the kids of those illegals are U.S. citizens) and legal “chain” immigration will turn Texas into another California-like, Democratic basket case not too far in the future.

We can hope that decent education will eventually make conservatives out of many Hispanics, but at best it will take a pretty long while.

Either she lied to Beck about the Truthers raising excellent points and the government withholding information needed to ascertain whether or not 9-11 was an inside job, or she lied one or two days later in her press release in which she told us that Islamists terrorists were responsible for the 9-11 attacks and that these aren’t the droids we’re looking for.

I think that the likeliest explanation is that Medina knows that 9-11 is not aninside job but is so beholden to the Paulite nutjobs that fund her campaign that she didn’t dare contradict their kooky Truther delusions on the air. Talk about being in the pockets of special interests! Medina would be no one’s governor but Ron Paul’s.

Either that, or she’s a 9-11 Truther and she lied the second time and not the first time.

You can spew hatred all day long, and it will still not make Perry anything other than “conservative.” I am no great fan of Perry, but he is a conservative.

Wow, so I can conclude that a candidates fumbled answer on a **useless conspiracy theory** is more important to you than the candidates position on state sovereignty, individual freedom and the Constitution?

Win or lose how will you vote in the General? GOP, DEM or 3rd loser? I think Medina’s flash

Here's the deal. Everyone I know believes that if a "Conservative" is not on the ticket we lose. PERIOD!

Here is the problem most people seem to be having with the old argument that we must elect a Republican regardless their values. The old argument that we need to keep "them (those evil democrats)" out of office at any cost, crap. We are still getting the same end result by voting for liberal republicans. I'M THROUGH voting for scumbags just because they call themselves Republicans. If they are NOT a "Conservative" Conservatives have lost and my vote isn't going to matter anyway.

I'm not a moderate. I'm not going to compromise away my freedoms just so some half-wit will allegedly like me. If a politician does not value life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness and very limited government the way I do. then I'm not giving him/her my vote! Those of you that do vote for a person lacking a spine and character just to keep someone else out of office should be ashamed of yourselves for having no principles.
The primaries are where we should put forth our best conservative candidate and not just a poor imitation of the liberal candidate.

Months ago, didn’t Hutchison state an intention to resign from the Senate when she began to campaign for governor seriously?

Hatred? WTF? Grow up.

One more thing. If Perry is a "Conservative" Obama is a "Christian."

Obama a Christian?

I will vote for Medina, if she loses I will either
not vote, vote for anyone else on the ballot who is
not a Republican or Democrat. The time has come to
quit voting for incumbents...we will never help our
country by sending the same people back to do the
same thing...over and over...

While I do not care for everything that Rcik Perry does, he at least has fought the communist POTUS Obama at evey turn.

And he ended the political career of Jim Hightower back in 1990.

Well, I am not interested in someone who is dumb enough to even consider US government and 911...a truther. Hutchison is way to moderate...she allowed DC to corrupt her. Perry has a track record mostly OK...so I'll stick with him.

NO dem has a chance of winning as Governor thanks to the impostor. The Austin Stateman is typical of the left thinking...a dem has a chance...HA
