Kd Lang Hallelujah, Canadian pop music royalty shone brightly tonight at the opening ceremonies for the 21st Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Canada. One of the top musical highlights was a stunning performance of Canadian poet/songwriter Leonard Cohens song Hallelujah by Canadian singer k.d. lang. She first recorded the song in 2004 for her album Hymns of the 49th Parallel. She also performed Hallelujah at the 2005 Juno Awards. In the past three years the song has taken on iconic status. In 2008 American Idol contestant Jason Castro delivered a performance that generated such interest in the song that Jeff Buckleys much admired 1994 recording of Hallelujah topped the Billboard Digital Tracks chart. Later in that same year X Factor winner Alexandra Burke topped the UK pop singles chart with her version and Jeff Buckleys Hallelujah hit #2. More recently Justin Timberlake went to #13 on the Billboard Hot 100 with his interpretation of Hallelujah from the Hope For Haiti Now telethon.
Earlier in the ceremonies top Canadian pop stars Nelly Furtado and Bryan Adams performed a duet on a song titled Bang the Drum written by Adams. Sarah McLachlan joined the parade of stars with a solo performance at the piano. In another powerful tribute to Canadian pop music, Joni Mitchells classic Both Sides Now provided the backdrop for a moving aerial and dance performance. Finally, Anne Murray, one of the bestselling Canadian pop singers of all time, was one of the notable Canadian personalities chosen to carry the official Olympic flag into the stadium.

It all started when women began wearing pants, and society gradually accepted it. Back when I was little a respectable woman would not be seen in public (outside of working in the field) in a pair of pants or slacks. Up until the time I was in high school girls were not allowed to wear pants or slacks to school unless it was below 32 degrees, and even then they were encouraged to wear tights under their dresses rather than pants.
The crumbling of society’s morals starts with small steps.
i actually met him briefly at uga in “77 or ‘78 through a friend.
he did not say much but i was thrilled just to get close enough to
shake hands.
I swear, I really did think it was Wayne at first. Then I thought "No... too young to be him. Oh, NOW I know who it is. Damn, Clay Aiken sure has put on weight!"
Jeff Buckley’s version rules.
Whats with the barefoot “flasher” outfit? LoL
A seriously underrated musician.
Thanks for the Cale version -I’m a big VU fan. I’m a it meh on the KD Lang cover. I’ll Buckley’s or Cohen’s renditions over it anyday.
I hate to burst bubbles, but according to Leonard Cohen, the song is about having sexual intercourse.
Cale is a bit of an eccentric, but he isnt a freek like Lang.
Her treatment of the song was creepy to me as well.
I like the Leonard Cohen tune hallelujah. I call it a spiritual song for atheists and those who don’t attend services, ever
Leonard Cohen has written and sung many great tunes but Hallelujah alone would redeem him
Never figured out what she had on...it was STRANGE!
Last Summer I saw Michael McDonald at Bass Hall here in Fort Worth, and he sang “Hallelujah” alone on stage with his piano. It was pretty powerful.
If you ever get a chance to see someone you like at Bass Hall, GO. It is one of the best venues ever for a great vocalist.
Not the IOC version but on Youtube
I swear, in this clip you can even see her mustache! Good listening, though.
yes, quite brilliant, not always accessible but a guy who made the music
he wanted to, i think. i feel the same about brian eno and kevin
ayres.
Very very nice. John Cale is known as a viola player so he has a string section there. Spare irony sung in church made from stone
I was pleasantly surprised to see k.d. Lang performing last night. She’s one of the best singers of all time.
They learned to hate themselves at a very early age, especially the fact that they were a girl. She must have felt powerless in her first two years of life and she had no men in her life who she loved or trusted. She has a major void in her soul--is mixed up....and yes, she is emotionally disturbed and no pretending can ever make her whole, because what she does is against Natural Law. Only a belief in God could fill the void.
I think you’ve got it about right.
