Despite luge death, Olympic ceremonies open

VANCOUVER, British Columbia – In time-honored tradition, the show went on. Despite the training-run death earlier in the day of a luger from the country of Georgia, the Olympics' opening ceremonies were launched Friday night with a jubilant countdown by the crowd filling BC Place Stadium.

The festive mood, and the opening rain of confetti, contrasted sharply with the grief that befell the games earlier in the day when luger Nodar Kumaritashvili of the republic of Georgia died in a horrific crash on the sliding track at Whistler.

"This is a very sad day," said a visibly shaken Jacques Rogge, president of the International Olympic Committee. "The IOC is in deep mourning."

Do you live in NY or LA?

You don’t live in Montana!

US team just came in a couple minutes ago, to much applause. I hope a lot of it was coming from my fellow Canadians, as befits a welcome to our southern neighbour.

And now Canada’s team is in.

I enjoy the winter olympics particularly for the sports you seldom get to see the rest of the time, like long and short track speed skating, luge, boardercross, etc. I’ll pass on the figure skating, though.

With any luck; GE/NBC will lose their shirts broadcasting these Olympics...

“and of course, Obama managed to sneak in his 15 seconds..”

LOL! No way even he would show his face at the White Olympic Games. Although, I heard that half of him is a big hockey fan!

Direct TV at my southern California house.
They did ask me when it was installed if I wanted local channels.
No not Montana, never lived there but did drive through once in a snow storm - man that was way interesting.

I don’t understand why they don’t stream it live on the internet?! Wouldn’t that make them even more money?

Sadly your neighbors to the south will not see much of anyone but Americans. I once spent a Summer Olympics fortnight in Britain. The BBC showed all the athletes from all the countries and many of the qualifying heats, trials, etc. NBC usually shows American athlete interviews and NBC reporters. I would like to see much more of the games.

You live in California and you drove thru Montana? I bet that was interesting!

What’s a little snow?

Our congressman went to work this week, as did most of his staff, who are from Montana....we aren’t scared by a little snow! You know, we lived for a few years in Wash. DC during the last big snow year: 2003. Our kids were amazed that they had “snow days” when school was closed! LOL! Our schools never close.

But, they don't offer them here in Montana. Because our government wants to stick their nose even in our tv habits; We have to get permission from our local stations to get the feed from LA or NY. I can not get that permission! And the stupid digital antenna I got, does not work....

Oh, I know, I’ve seen the US networks’ coverage of the Olympics. Pretty pathetic. Don’t get me wrong, I can understand the natural inclination to give more coverage to the sports where your (or my) country is a serious player, but running fluff pieces when there’s actual sports going on is pretty poor. CBC’s coverage usually seems better balanced and more sport-oriented. We’ll see how CTV’s coverage of the games goes.

It was the coldest I have ever been. We had our snow close on, the heater full blast and I still thought we were going to freeze to death.
Yet at the same time is was quite beautiful.
You are all hardy folk.

I can't remember the first time I saw the Luge event, but I DO remember thinking two things;

Where the hell did THIS come from? (I amazingly associated this with Kwanza ... somebody dropped acid and thought , ... "HEY! .. I got an idea .. ")

The other thought was ... These guys were nuckin' futs!

Wish we could get your feed. And may I say, if the American isn’t going to win a medal in a given sport, I am always happy to cheer on the Canadian or the Brit!

I went to Caracas several years ago. I figure that a lot of international folks will read this thread so I’m going to ask for help with a phrase I saw in Caracas:

Chavez
Farzante
Comunista

I can guess the second word from context but I’d like a true translation from a Venezuelan if possible.

Thanks.

PS: The weather forecast for Vancouver is not rain, it’s a blizzard, last I heard.
