AP source: Obama to announce nuke plant loan

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama next week will announce a loan guarantee to build the first nuclear power plant in the United States in almost three decades, an administration official said Friday.

The two new Southern Co. reactors to be built in Burke, Ga., are part of a White House energy plan administration officials hope will draw Republican support. Obama's direct involvement in announcing the award underscores the political weight the White House is putting behind its effort to use nuclear power and alternative energy sources to lessen American dependence on foreign oil and reduce the use of other fossil fuels blamed for global warming.

Loan guarantees for other sites are expected to be announced in the coming months, the official said, speaking on the condition of anonymity because the decision had not yet been made public. The federal guarantees are seen as essential for construction of any new reactor because of the huge expense involved. Critics call the guarantees a form of subsidy and say taxpayers will assume a huge risk, given the industry's record of cost overruns and loan defaults.

...knock me over with a feather...
Or is this one those deals where with fanfare he'll guarantee the loans, but then he'll have the EPA squash the permits?
You have to keep a close eye on these conmen, and their shell games...

Is this an all-new plant or an expansion of an existing one?

We’re talking 2 to 3 years before a permit would even get issues to build ‘em and then the wave of enviroNut lawsuits starts..

So, Hussein, where are we gonna put all that spent nuclear waste? One of the first of your many jackass moves was to essentially shut down the Yucca Flats site in Nevada.

And why is this a loan-needed issue anyway? Why not let privaate investors fund it and MAKE A PROFIT? This loan crap from the feds always comes with too many strings attached.

Obama is amazing...

he couldn't pour piss out of a boot, if the directions were printed on the heel!!

And yet, he still considers himself the smartest man in the world.

I am with Rush Limbaugh..., whatever room Obama walks into...

he is the least experienced and most clueless person in attendance!!

If true, and with no "gotchas", the GOP should support this loud and clear.

In fact, I'm hopin' Palin comes out loud and clear in support...again, if it's not dirty BS.

However, I have little faith in the GOP leadership. AFTER (hear that, AFTER) we blow up the Starship Progressive in November, we need to deal with some of these "unprincipled conservatives".

I don't see this going anywhere.
Of all things to announce ... We're gonna' fund a nuclear bomb in your back yard.

I worded that intentionally to show how the stink and fury will rise.

ANWR is remote, oil is plentiful, a LOT of jobs for construction and truck drivers ... and a source of energy more varied and portable than hot electrons.

Smoke n' mirrors, I say.
