VANCOUVER, British Columbia(AP)—A men’s luger from the former Soviet republic of Georgia died Friday after a crash during training, an Olympic official with direct knowledge of the situation said. The death cast a shocking pall over the Vancouver Olympics hours before the opening ceremony.

The official told The Associated Press that the International Olympic Committee received confirmation of Nodar Kumaritashvili’s death. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the 21-year-old luger’s family hadn’t been notified yet

Very sad news to kick off the Olympics. Prayers for his family.

That said, luge is a one man suicide ride.

“family hadn’t been notified yet”

Of course the whole world knows now.

Oh no, this is not good, starting the Olympics with a death. Very sad, and as the above poster said, a suicide mission.

It was unclear how fast Kumaritashvili was going, although many sliders have exceeded 90 mph on this course. The track is considered the world’s fastest and several Olympians recently questioned its safety. More than a dozen athletes have crashed during Olympic training for luge, and some questioned whether athletes from smaller nations - like Georgia - had enough time to prepare for the daunting track.

There have been complaints the Canadians were keeping foreigners from practicing on the venues. I wonder if this applied to the luge.

Sad. This Olympics seems jinxed from the get-go.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the 21-year-old luger’s family hadn’t been notified yet...

So, how does your anonymity help his family?

You might want to self-nuke that post. Athletes - who are used to doing injury-prone - but NOT DEADLY - competitions deserve better treatment.

A properly designed Luge track is NOT a suicide run.

R.I.P. Nodar Kumaritashvili. :-(

The resulting lawsuits may very well put the IOC out of business.

Isn't the press grand at keeping thing secret?

RIP...Prayers up.

If not the IOC (they are a big globalist entity, they're hard to sink), it will certainly put the hurt on the Vancouver organizers and the International Luge Federation.

It doesn't. What the anonymity does is help the loose-lipped attention whore keep his or her job.

I saw the videos before they were pulled. There was a row of vertical I-beams used for an overhead support along the track. For someone to put those up and not anticipate a luger going by at 90 mph, losing control and leaving the track is...criminal.

“help the loose-lipped attention whore keep his or her job.”

Probably figured “hey, the family probably doesn’t understand English!”/s
