Patrick Kennedy won't seek reelection
Politico ^ | 2/11/10 | JOHN BRESNAHAN

Posted on 02/11/2010 7:37:56 PM PST by ricks_place

Rhode Island Democratic Rep. Patrick Kennedy, the last member of his illustrious family currently serving in Congress, will announce on Friday that he is retiring, according to Democratic insiders.

Kennedy, 42, was first elected to Congress in 1994. He did a stint as chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee in the 1999-2000 cycle but has not served in the House Democratic leadership beyond that.

His congressional tenure was marked by repeated substance abuse problems, including a drunk-driving incident in 2006. He entered a rehab facility at that time and again in 2009.

Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-Mass.), the congressman's father, passed away last year. Democrats unexpectedly lost his seat last month to Republican Scott Brown.

He is going to move back to Massachusetts and challenge Scott Brown in 2012 (which is when the term Brown is completing expires).

'Patrick Kennedy won't seek reelection'
Poor, poor patches. I can see him now.
Sitting all alone in his favorite DC saloon...

Its quarter to three,
There's no one in the place
'cept you and me.
So set em up joe
I got a little story
I think you oughtta know.

Were drinking my friend
To the end of a brief episode
So make it one for my baby
And one more for the road

Noticed that "freepost" placed this delightful comment on the "Patrick Retires" news article at the WarshPost:

"Patrick Kennedy announced his retirement today so that he could focus more intensely on capturing Mary Jo Kopechne's killer. While his departure from office marks the end of an era, Mr. Kennedy won't be totally absent from public politics. In a bold move, Kennedy is teaming up with former D.C. Mayor Marion Barry in search of the crack dealer who ripped them off."

“he had to retire due to ill health; The voters got sick of him”—Howie Carr

That line deserves a re-post!

Love that Howie!

I think it's the perfect storm.... Teddy passes, so fewer money-men and influences are taking his calls... Republicans rising, courtesy of the Weakling... the alcohol, drugs, (and some say bisexuality) pressuring him more and more... and I think part of it was that he entered politics because it was the family business, that he did it for his Dad, but now he wants to step out of that man's long-casting shadow to see who Patrick really is.

So Goodbye, good luck... and quit the drugs and drink.

Glad to see another POS kennedy falling once again. May he please get hooked up on drugs/booze again, as a graceful exit.

Didn’t want to risk another public humiliation — this time by the voters instead of his own behavior.

Illustrious family?? Grandpa was a boot legger. JFK was a male wh***. Teddy let her drown...Patrick is a druggie and alcoholic...

Let's not forget Michael Kennedy, who had an affair with the 14-year-old babysitter, went to rehab and then died skiing into a tree when he was under investigation for statutory rape. And how about RFK's relative by marriage Michael Skakel, who killed a neighbor girl with a golf club? And what about that nephew William Kennedy Smith who was cleared of rape after a night of drunken carousing, along with Uncle Teddy, in much the same way Uncle Teddy was cleared of any culpability in Mary Jo Kopecne's death? We are so well rid of any stink of Kennedy near the public trough.

It is with a heavy heart that I receive the news that Patches will not seek reelection.

I had a party planned for his defeat on election night and those plans are now shot to hell.

Well said. This is one messed up kid who was desperately seeking Daddy’s love & attention (i.e. he used to relish asthma attacks as a kid cause it meant his father would be around him) and I think that more than anything was why he ran for Office - being in Congress was a unique bond he and his dad could share. Not a fan of him, but hope he gets his stuff together and finds peace (and never to see him in politics again).

Don’t be surprised if he moves to MA and runs for his Dad’s old seat in 2012 (not that it was his “Dad’s seat”).

Nothing would surprise me with this lot. Then again, Massachusetts has a Village Idiot quota to adhere to and (if the number of peeps that voted for Coakley is any indication) they are already well exceeding their limit.

Salute. Kennedys are toast.

True but only politically. They have more than enough money to keep them from starving from lack of a job.
