MTV Show 16 and Pregnant Criticized for Not Promoting Teen Abortions

New York, NY (LifeNews.com) -- The hit MTV television show "16 and Pregnant" is back for its controversial second season featuring a new slate of pregnant teenage girls and their stories. The network has never been one to shy away from abortion but
one pro-abortion blogger says she's upset the show doesn't promote teen abortions.

Blogger Jessica Valenti shows just how pro-abortion the pro-choice movement is because she's upset the show isn't promoting teen abortions and, instead, profiles girls who keep their baby.

"Where are the pregnant teens who choose not to stay pregnant? Where are the abortions?" she complains. "If MTV really wanted to prove themselves as responsible programmers, they would also feature pregnant teens who have abortions."

"I realize that it’s controversial to document a teenager who decides to end their pregnancy, but the fact is that nearly a third of all teen pregnancies end in abortion," Valenti says. "But if you were to watch MTV, you'd never know that – you'd think all young women choose to go through with the pregnancy."

Valenti complains that MTV has apparently decided that only teen pregnancies that end in birth are worth covering and that teen pregnancies that finish with the destruction of human life and injuring women aren't worthy.

Wendy Wright, the president of Concerned Women for America, said showing a teenager who had an abortion would trivialize the post-abortion problems many women face because such problems often take years to materialize.

"People are drawn to reality shows because they want to watch how others deal with challenges. The demands of TV require the challenges to be dramatic and concentrated in time," she told LifeNews.com.

"Like one commentator noted, abortion brings regret. But that's hard to show on TV. And the consequences may take months or years to exhibit," Wright said.

Wright said MTV's decision to not include a teenager who has an abortion "indicates that abortion is still not mainstream."

"It is so tragic, so disturbing that TV executives apparently recognize that it would be unappealing to viewers," she said.

MTV may also have shied away from showing teens getting abortions because it recognizes the fact that young Americans are more pro-life than previous generations.

The New York Times, CBS News and MTV itself teamed up for a poll the news agencies released in June 2007 that surveyed 659 Americans between the ages of 17 and 29.

A total of 62 percent of young Americans say abortion should not be permitted (24 percent) or more strictly limited (38 percent). That's higher than the 58 percent of older adults who give the same answers (split 21 and 37 percent respectively).

The poll also found fewer young Americans saying abortion should be available at any time with 37 percent favoring that compared to 39 percent of older adults.

While older adults favored no abortions or limited abortions by a 19 percent margin, that number rose to a 25 percent margin for the teens and young adults.

And a January 2006 Hamilton College poll found high school seniors take a pro-life position on abortion saying it's morally wrong and supporting legislative proposals that would limit abortions and help women find alternatives.

The poll also found 72 percent of females in the class of 2006 would not consider an abortion if they became pregnant.

The Hamilton College poll found a majority of high school seniors do not believe abortions should be allowed for sociological reasons such as when women are too poor to afford another child or unable to have a baby at the time.

Meanwhile, an April 2004 Zogby poll found 51.6% of 18-29 year-olds call themselves "pro-life."

"This is remarkable, not just because it confirms that a majority of the post-Roe generation is pro-life, but that they label themselves so," says Holly Smith, director of youth outreach for the National Right to Life Committee.

Though a majority call themselves pro-life, a much larger percentage actually take a pro-life position on abortion.

In the Zogby poll, 60 percent of 18-29 year-olds took one of three varying pro-life positions on abortion while only 39 percent agreed with the three pro-abortion stances.

My 21 yr old daughter watches it. I think it’s a good lesson. They certainly don’t glamorize teen parenthood, at least not the shows I’ve seen.

Hmmm...great programming. Let’s feature 5 girls that had an abortion. That would make riveting television.

I pray that she finds inner peace, knowing that the soul of her child forgives her for her past transgression.....precisely because of her remorse!

There are a few factors Ms. Valenti failed to consider about this particular show:

1) The casting process for MTVs reality programming works as most others...they put out a notice and filter out potential cast members from there. If pregnant teens who had or were going to have an abortion didn’t respond in numbers equal to those of other pregnant teens, the chances of their stories making it on air are less.

2) Most of the teens featured in the first season were well into their pregnancies. Also, labor, delivery, and early infancy were featured more than the pregnancies in many cases.

3) Appearing on the show requires parental consent. Take from that what you will...

4) On the follow up show “Teen Mom”, a few of the pregnant teens from “16 and Pregnant” are shown raising their babies or dealing with giving a baby up for adoption. One cannot be a Teen Mom if one never gave birth.

They actually have done a show on abstinence. It was part of their True Life series. And they used to feature cast members who practice abstinence on the Real World...although I doubt that’s the case now.

It is. On the first season of “16 and Pregnant” and “Teen Mom”, they followed a couple named Catelynn and Tyler who made the decision together to put their baby up for adoption. I was taken aback at how mature and strong these two were, especially considering their parents negative reactions to adoption.

I actually found this show to be really honest and it’s a good tool for a counselor like myself to use in my work. I’ve had girls come to me after seeing the show with a lot of thoughts and questions they had never considered before regarding sex and relationships.

It recognizes the fact that young Americans are more pro-life than previous generations.

Ironic. It almost seems that it took abortion, to stop abortion.

Yes, one of the girls and her boyfriend gave the baby up for adoption to a great family. They maintain contact with them, and the little girl is adorable. I commend them because I know I could personally never give my child up for adoption.

My lovely wife had an abortion when she was 17 which haunts her to this day. We’ve been married ten years. She’s now 38. We don’t have any children which I believe intensifies her remorse.

Your wife is not alone. There are millions of us out there, haunted by our previous actions. I hope she has received forgiveness for her actions, so that complete healing (although regret remains, of course) can take place.

Actually it isn’t a bad show and for any teen who thinks she might want a child might open their eyes about how it is not such a great thing to go through so young. The girls all realize that they have given their lives up too young and they even have one couple who choose to put their baby up for adoption.

Your local Christian pregnancy center will have post abortion programs.

Contrary to what the feminists say, what your wife is experiencing is very real. Every maternal instinct she had was violated by that abortion.

But there is help and healing available.

My wife ran such a center for a dozen years. One woman who attended post abortion counseling had her abortion 40 years before, and it still bothered her.

She doesn’t have to carry this albatross around her neck forever.

We are too both Christians. I guess what she will ultimately need to do is fully embrace the fact she is forgiven and go from there. Where she gets that epiphany from will come from the Lord.

That is when you fully comprehend grace.

You are her spiritual umbrella.

Best to you both.

thanks for the feedback. I guess I should file it under “silver linings” or some such thing. Maybe “lesser evils.” Sort of like the “condom” approach to sex, though, isn’t it?

Yep, the title of the show is 16 and Pregnant. We caught it on a marathon showing and then watch the follow-up, Teen Mom, this season.

IMO, teen girls keeping their babies is no where near as bad as murdering their babies.

Both are horrendous acts of selfishness, murder being only slightly worse than the lifelong sentence imposed upon an innocent child by not giving it up for adoption to a stable, loving, MARRIED, heterosexual two-parent, family. I'm not trying to mitigate murder, I'm elevating the decision by teens to keep and "raise" their illegitimate children to a level of disaster.

I can't imagine what society will look like when this generation of children raised by children and a series of live-in boyfriends will look like in twenty years.

Adoption is fine if that is what the parents choose. It’s their decision. However, I don’t think adoption is a perfect thing, for the parents or the child.

I doubt I would have ever given away my child had I been in that position as a teen or unmarried woman. And, if one of my own children find themselves in that position, there’s no way I would suggest giving away family.

There’s no guarantee that the “stable, loving, married, heterosexual two parent family” will stay that way.

I think murdering an innocent child is a whole lot worse.

I get what you’re saying and I agree to an extent. We see what’s happening in certain segments of society. What’s more disturbing, imo, is how some families don’t take of their own, entitlement attitude, etc.
