A large majority of U.S. voters believe that homosexual men and women should be allowed to serve openly in the US military, according to a poll out Wednesday.

The independent Quinnipiac University poll asked Americans about their views on the law that requires gay service members to keep quiet about their sexual orientation or face expulsion from the military, known as "Don't Ask, Don't Tell."

The survey was conducted after President Barack Obama last month renewed his vow to change the law and allow gays to serve openly in uniform.

The poll found that 57 percent of US voters believe that gays should serve openly, an idea opposed by 36 percent.

Americans also believe by a 66 to 31 percent margin that it is discriminatory to prevent openly gay men and women to serve.

However, by a 54 to 38 percent margin, those surveyed also believe that gays serving in the military should limit displaying their sexual orientation on the job.

US military households -- homes with an active or reserve member, or a veteran in their family -- were evenly divided over the issue.

I would like to know how we will identify gays in the military? Will they wear pink uniforms? or will we tattoo somthing on their forheads? I'd imagine that would be pretty counter-productive. Most gays in the military probably would rather keep it to themselves anyway. It's not like someone's sexual preference has anything to do with being able to perform your job as a soldier. If you're a gay guy who wants to serve your country, the only thing that may get in the way of that would be other people's perception of you, not your own sexual preference.

I think we have one too many desk jockeys wearing uniforms.

What do military recognitions occur today? Distingished pencil sharpening? Advanced multicultural sensitivity training merit badge? Golded Political Correctness Star?

I was in the navy for 21 years (11 on active duty and 10 in the reserves). I was near Baghdad, in the Triangle of Death, in a marine infantry unit, Sept. 2004-Mar. ‘05. When I was in the navy, I didn’t hear any of my co-workers say that gays should be in the military. In basic training, we had to take showers in groups. If gays could join, they would enjoy the showers too much. That would be unfair, since I wasn’t able to shower with a group of women.

Everyone I know who’s serving or has served is against this. Strongly.

Bingo!

I would guess that none of the people in the poll are serving or have ever served in the military.

Ask those in the military, not the overwhelming majority of liberals who will never be in the military.

Actually, it matters not a whit what we think. We volunteer to serve our country and if our country wants us to serve with open gays, wear flowers in our hair or invade Canada, that's what we do.

Sure, I have an opinion on the matter but in the military, I do what I'm told.

This is because the public are a bunch of uninformed sheeple. The military is supposed to be a well oiled machine with officers doing their part to keep things rolling smoothly. Officers don’t have time to dicipline troops because a fruit loop is getting them stired up. Officers will be spending half their time keeping the peace and separating people. All of this baloney was already tried in Vietnam during the draft and it was a waste of time.

Bronze Star for meritorious service, 200 missions in East Baghdad, combat leadership...........my son.

Don't diss the entire military because some of it's "leadership" stinks.

Some military recognitions are well earned. In fact, most are.

after you oust career vets and the combat generals... add 10-15 years... and tailor the recruiting... eventually you’ll have a progressive enough crowd to say anything you want

the US military has been the progressives bonsai tree for decades

Not to mention the spread of disease of every imaginable kind along with rimming, felching, and other acts involving consumption of feces just brimming with (according to homos) delectable bacteria of every species. If people had a clue of the public health threat, which is far worse than tobacco, they would vote overwhelmingly for quarantine. This is all about the marketing of deviance.

Maybe you haven't, but it's no secret that allowing gays in the military has had strong public support for many years now regardless of how you or I may feel about it. I asked earlier if anyone can point to a public poll that said otherwise. Nobody has posted one.

Exactly! I’m for DRAFTING all the gays into the military. And then putting them on the front lines, and getting on with a few little wars....

“Gay Troll Patrol” seems to be out in force...

Does this mean the viking kittens would have to have sensitivity training?

Yes, I’d think that many conservatives with the means to do so would be very willing to publish a public poll with those results - why wouldn’t they??
