Six Faulted Over Fort Hood Military to Discipline Officers for Failing to Report Views of Suspect in Texas Shootings

By YOCHI J. DREAZEN

The military will formally discipline at least six officers, mostly from Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, for failing to take action against the officer accused of carrying out last year's deadly shooting rampage at Fort Hood, according to people familiar with the matter.

Senior Army officials said the decision to punish so many officers reflects the military's belief that the November assault, which killed 13 people at the Army base in central Texas, could have been prevented if Maj. Nidal Hasan's superiors had alerted authorities to his increasing Islamist radicalization.

The officials said that as many as eight officers could ultimately be censured over Maj. Hasan, mostly with letters of reprimand that effectively end their military careers. The punishments will be detailed in an "accountability review" that Army Gen. Carter Ham, who has been investigating the shootings for several months, will deliver to top Army officials as early as Friday.

An Army spokesman said that Gen. Ham's accountability review would be submitted within days, but declined to comment further on the inquiry.

People familiar with the matter said the Army had earlier notified eight officers that they were under investigation, including Col. John Bradley, who until recently ran Walter Reed's psychiatry department, and Col. Charles Engel, a psychiatrist who supervised Maj. Hasan when he was doing a fellowship at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences.

I hope the Army will use this to take a hard look at how deeply political correctness has impacted the military culture. I’ll bet these officers had some pretty tight constraints on them.

Here goes the proverbial pass the buck scenario... if these officials had reported this to anyone higher up would something have really been done to remove the madman Hasan?

Between the PC police, the stupidest Rules of Engagement ever conceived, and the disarming of our soldiers on our military bases, we are doomed, and these 6 men are screwed.

If they had reported this guy as a terror threat, they would have lost their jobs, and they know it. The people who should lose their jobs are the people who made up the policy of giving a free pass and special privileges to the members of the death cult.

What do you bet that these military officers are punished more severely than the perpetrator?

I wonder if they will go after guys like General Casey who instill the mentality to look the other way.

“Gen. Casey fears backlash against Muslim soldiers
By Eric Zimmermann - 11/08/09 11:44 AM ET
Premature speculation about the causes of the Fort Hood shooting could cause a backlash against Muslim soldiers, the top-ranking official in the Army said Sunday.

Appearing on a handful of Sunday morning shows, Gen. George Casey said no one should rush to draw judgments about the shooter’s reported anti-American views.

“The speculation could potentially heighten the backlash agains some of our Muslim soldiers,” he told ABC’s “This Week.”

As horrific as the shooting was, “it would be an every greater tragedy if our diversity became a casualty here,” he warned.

Casey said investigators believe Major Nidal Malik Hasan was the only shooter involved, despite early reports that there may have been two or three. Casey said those reports mistook soldiers fleeing the scene as suspects.

And while Casey would not rule out terrorism as a motive, he cautioned that it was too early to draw definitive conclusions.

“That’s anecdotal evidence,” he told “Meet the Press,” referring to Hasan’s alleged radical views. “I think those things will be confirmed or denied over the course of the investigation.”

Casey said the Army will continue to do everything it can do address the mental health problems that arise in soldiers.

“We will take a hard look at ourselves as an army, because we want to make sure nothing like this happens again,” he said.

He emphasized the Army’s campaign to reduce the stigma associated with post-traumatic stress disorder, which he said had led to a 40 percent increase in soldiers stepping forward to get help.

He also pointed to extended tours of duty that have stretched the armed forces beyond their capacity.

“You’ve heard me talking about the Army being out of balance for two years,” he told “Meet the Press.”

These doctors (and that is how they prefer to be addressed but I’m sure most FReepers know that) are victims of PC because to have called Hasan out for his aberrant behavior before the Hood shooting would have meant the wrath of some equal opportunity slacker and similar letters of reprimand. These doctors likely knew and understood that even if they could not speak of it. The REAL EVIL of the situation is that is how Hasan was able to stay until he could slaughter our troops for Allah. This report does not address the root cause.

As to “the end of their career”, they weren’t going to see flag rank anyway as doctors make it to O-6 for enhanced pay purposes due to having an MD and length of service, not because they were the next incarnation of George Patton. It is possible they are already at 20 years plus of service and could retire as an O-6 if otherwise qualified.

Maj. Hasan, the sole suspect in the shootings, arrived at Walter Reed in 2003 and spent six years there training to be an Army psychiatrist. He was transferred to Fort Hood in July 2009, less than four months before allegedly opening fire on dozens of his fellow soldiers.

The very idea that a faithful muslim could be a psychiatrist treating soldiers in a war against muslim extremists is ludicrous on its face. The U.S. needs to understand what the Koran demands of its adherents.

These officers will be the whipping boys for all that is wrong with the liberal establishment. It's a disgrace. I hope they get good lawyers, and if they are drummed out of the service, write tell-all books.

I wonder how the PC Army brass managed to word this report, and still not mentino Islam, jihad etc.

The censured officers knew what every officer knows: Muslims are a “protected class.”

If they had reporte Hassan last year, and he had NOT gone on a rampage, THEY would have fallen on their swords for “anti islamic bias.”

And that is still in effect today. These meaningless “censures” can only come AFTER a rampage.
