Hostettler not intimidated by Coats Says he won't step aside from GOP Senate campaign trail

EVANSVILLE — John Hostettler has been wearing the tread off his tires crisscrossing the state to get signatures for his U.S. Senate campaign, and he can see no good reason to step aside for former Sen. Dan Coats, R-Ind.

Hostettler, a Republican who represented the 8th District in Congress for 12 years until his defeat in 2006, has watched over the past month as national and state Republicans tried to recruit first Rep. Mike Pence, R-Ind., and now Coats to challenge Sen. Evan Bayh, D-Ind., this year.

Coats' statement Wednesday that he had authorized supporters to begin gathering signatures to qualify for the May 4 primary ballot was hailed as potentially a major recruiting victory for the GOP...

The implication was clear: Hostettler and three other Republican candidates — state Sen. Marlin Stutzman of Howe, Fishers businessman Richard Behney and Richmond financial adviser Don Bates Jr. — would be swept aside quickly.

Speaking from the road on Friday, Hostettler said it has not occurred to him to feel slighted.

"Being the eighth of 10 children, I lost any semblance of ego a long, long time ago, and so I've learned that if you want to get something done, you just do it," he said with a chuckle...

Leyva stopped short of endorsing Hostettler, but he said an anti-Coats wave already is building among leaders of the tea party movement statewide.

"We had a conference call Thursday night with nine other tea party leaders who want to form a statewide coalition," he said. "All I can say is, we don't want Dan Coats."

Leyva pointedly noted that for the past 10-plus years the 66-year-old Coats has been an ambassador serving in Germany or a federal lobbyist living and voting in Virginia.

It’s too bad Peyton Manning isn’t closer to retirement from the NFL. He could easily win that seat in Indiana.

Well, I think we certainly want to know which of these two candidates is the better choice, and this strikes me as very important to know about.

Before you decide, check out Richard Behney at RichardBehney.com
Richard is a businessman, and founder of the IN TEA Party. He helped to organize a Tax Day TEA Party last April that brought over 10,000 to downtown Indy. He is a fearless, principled Conservative and a strong defender of the Constitution. Hoosiers want some fresh ideas and new faces. Richard Behney is the one to say “Buh-Bayh!”

The tea party opposition depends upon petty infighting and bickering to survive as the competition eats its own. The tea party itself relies upon honest competition and a war of ideas to burnish the most competitive and best candidates possible. It’s a fine line, and not everyone will be happy with all the results, but allegiances must be formed in the battles to win the war of ideas. Let the best man (or woman) win the primary, and let that man or woman win the election.

Hostettler is good. Coats stepped down in 1996 because he feared he would lose to Bayh in a nationally Democrat year. Coats won’t have the fire in the belly that Hostettler did, but Hostettler scares the faint-hearted IN “moderates” of the Lugar persuasion.

During the Indiana Primaries, I don’t want Coats to be the only choice on the GOP side! Also, the entire U.S. Senate seriously needs some much younger politicians in it!
