Seattle bus tunnel guards watch brutal beating (called police and did nothing else per policy)

SEATTLE – Three unarmed security guards stood by and watched last month as a 15-year-old girl was punched, knocked to the ground, kicked in the head and robbed in a downtown Seattle bus tunnel. The guards' actions during the brutal attack — captured on surveillance video — have prompted a review of the policy that unarmed, civilian guards call police and not try to stop fights or crimes.

Surveillance video first aired by Seattle's KING-TV this week shows the attack at Westlake Station on Jan. 28. The victim appears several seconds before her attackers and sidles up to the three guards, who are standing together and talking.

When a group of teens and young adults approaches the girl, she appears to seek refuge by moving around to the other side of the guards.

Another 15-year-old girl shoves the victim and begins punching her. The two crash into a wall and then onto the floor. The assailant gets up and kicks and stomps on the girl's head. Others grab her purse, iPod and cell phone.

Actually that happened in the Hilltop area of Tacoma. The News Tribune did a huge magazine story about it last year.

There may be but Seattle sounds more like NYC, watch an attack and shrug.
You're basing that on the incident in this one article?

Boy are you blind. They observe and report because the cops want part time work. See Ca Laws on guards. You want to hire a real guard you will have to hire an off duty cop.

Yep. If the guards had even touched the attacker, they’d likely have ended up in court. It’s that kind of thing that scares people into inaction more than fear of bodily harm. Not justifying what they did, but it’s even a risk being a good Samaritan nowadays. I think we’ve all heard about people trying to help accident victims and being sued for causing injuries whether they did or not. Good Samaritan laws don’t cover everybody and do not apply everywhere. And, I suspect they have as much force as a “not responsible for injury” notice that can be discarded at a judge’s discretion.

Did they watch a vicious attack and do nothing?

Yes, but only a complete idiot would attempt to make a generalization about an entire area of the country based on one incident.

“security guards

Apparently I’m missing something here.”

I’d rephrase “paid thugs” — they were nothing but useless observers.

Taxpayer funded witnesses.

What weren’t the ‘security’ guards armed with mace or pepper spray?
