Iranian threat of a stunning punch causes concern in D.C.

WASHINGTON (KMOX Radio) -- A warning earlier this week from Iran's supreme ruler that his country will deliver a "punch" February 11th that will "stun" the West is being taken seriously at the highest levels of the U-S government, according to Missouri's two Senators.

Democratic Missouri Senator Claire McCaskill described the concern about Iran today in Washington as a matter of "almost hyper focus."

"I know the military is monitoring it carefully. I know the intelligence community is monitoring it carefully. I can't share many of the details of that. But I will say that I think our government is very, very, very concerned."

Earlier this week, Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said in a speech that: "The Iranian nation, with its unity and God's grace, will punch the arrogance (Western Powers) on the 22nd of Bahman (February 11) in a way that will leave them stunned."

I hope something happens. I’m bored.

That's funny. Love your tag line too.

It’s a bit late to be worrying about it now.

BTW, hasn’t this nimrod ever heard the adage about “never letting an enemy know what you really think”? Thank are Founding Fathers for realizing the importance of giving these amateurs only 2 years before facing the voters.

Every year Iran (Aryan) sets up a date for some world shaking event to happen. Then nothing happens.

Watch them like a hawk!

Posted this on another thread & thought I’d share it here, if anyone is interested:

Here’s what I’ve heard over the last day or two (just hearsay, mind you):

Israel is evacuating all non-essential personnel form northern and eastern borders. A poster in Tel Aviv is fearful. There is some appearance of preparation for war by Hamas/Hezbollah, etc. We are bulking up our patriot missile presence and our naval presence in the region. I have a friend who just got deployed to the UAE; she was being told if war broke out in the region, we would be acting from there.

Back to us:

1) We, even with Obama at the helm, would be a backup for Israel. Therefore, Iran would have a motive for having us unable or unwilling to help Israel.

2) Just a few days ago, Iran launched a new Satellite into orbit called “Omid” which means “Hope,” (irony there, eh?). Omid is in a Low Earth Orbit (LEO) not unlike that of a classic ICBM, ostensibly with simple biology experiments on board (worms, turtles, etc.).

Theories on Omid:
a) If the right kind of nuclear device is on board, a detonation a few hundred miles over the US could result in a serious EMP (Electro-Magnetic Pulse) event. This would be severely disabling to the US technology infrastructure, taking down the power grid indefinitely, not to mention everything attached to it, as well as any insufficiently shielded independent electronics, including our own satellite fleet, if in line of sight to the detonation.

This would severely hobble any US aid to Israel, clearing the way for an all-out middle-eastern war with Israel at the disadvantage.

b) A more benign theory is that merely de-orbiting the satellite to a precise and symbolic target would send the West a “stunning” message, that Iran has fully entered the fraternity of nuclear powers and any sanctions against it will be useless.

3) Non-Omid theories
a) A new alignment between Iran and China will be announced, having roughly the same “stunning” effect of demonstrating the West’s permanent inability to hamper Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

b) Iran will openly conduct an underground nuclear detonation. Again, the real objective being to get the sanctions removed by created a sense of futility. However, some have determined that not long ago an earthquake in a remote location in Iran had a seismic signature that fits with a nuclear detonation, so I’m not sure what the point would be if that’s the case.

c) The anticipated protests of the Iranian people on February 11th will be met with such a complete, Tiananmen Square-like response that the West will never again interfere in Iran’s internal affairs.

d) Iran will assert control of the Straights of Hormuz, “punching” the West economically. This could be coordinated with a Chinese action to sell off US bonds, driving our economy into a profound chaos.

e) A freighter sits somewhere close to the US with a missile that can be launched straight up and detonated for it’s EMP effect. With only minutes to respond, it is uncertain we could defend ourselves. See EMP discussion above.

Supporting this is the report that over the last year, Iran has conducted a number of missile tests which exactly match this profile, i.e., straight up launches from boats to altitudes in the 200-300 mile range.

f) None of the above. Iran is playing psych-ops with the West; all the above scenarios are being tossed out there to get attention and distract from the internal turmoil of the country. Nothing significant will happen.

g) Some or all of the above.

What do I think? The war prep in Israel is real. Omid is real, but uncertainty keeps us from knowing whether they mean us harm by it or not. In theory, in their theological context it works best if we are drawn offside and make the first move. Personally, I think this is a hard count designed to do just that.

But in the end, I just don’t know. Not at my pay grade.

This is what stood out to me and scares me:

But technically, if Iran can send a missile up into space and have it explode, it could shut down our electronics; that would do more damage to us than any conventional bomb ever could. Imagine the chaos if an EMP bomb took all of our computers, phones, TVs, lights and flipped them off? America would be out of business.

The fact that no one can (or is willing) to talk about it probably does not bode well. Hope I am wrong, but I have a bad feeling on this

I think your bad feelings are justified. The last threat came from Khameini, not Ahmadinejehad. That's significant. I don't know what they have in mind but I feel pretty certain that it isn't all bluster.

"My bet is that they’ll test an A-bomb... making complete fools of all the so-called western leaders.

This could be Obama’s version of Carter’s desert rescue debacle and doom him to one term."

My thoughts as well, the statements of Wackadinejad aren't normally accompanied by a reinforcing statement from a Mullah.

Saddam Hussein’s constant bragging of his power is what got him killed. This nut is going to follow the same path.

Where’s Jack Bauer when you need him?

He's been incarcerated as a suspected right-wing extremist under order of that guy who runs Homeland Security, Janet Napolitano.

I look a little further than that. The Iranians launched those animals into space to die, just as the Russians did in the early space-age with Leika, the German Shepherd. We launched a monkey into space so we could return it alive. They did it to watch the animals freeze to death in space.

We don’t share many values with the East.
