Senator John McCain has introduced a bill that if passed will drive up the cost of dietary supplements and restrict your access to them.
This bill seeks to give the FDA complete and arbitrary control over what supplements you are allowed to have...
The bill being spearheaded by Senators John McCain and Byron Dorgan represents the kind of federal regulation that is not only ineffective, but also suffocates innovation in ways that inflict permanent damage to this nations economic vitality.
The bill supposedly originates from the controversy surrounding the use of steroids by Major League Baseball players. Since some unethical companies illegally sold steroid drugs as dietary supplements, certain members of the Senate (i.e., John McCain and Byron Dorgan) appear to have been deceived into believing that the FDA needs to be given additional power to ban dietary supplements across the board.
The fact is that the FDA has all the legal authority it needs to remove supplements that contain illegal drugs from the market. The FDA has failed to do its job, and there are companies selling dietary supplements that contain prescription drugs. If the FDA continues to fail to do its job, then these companies will continue to sell drug-tainted supplements no matter what new laws are created by Congress.

Good grief. McCain is doing the RATs work for them. This hampers consumers’s ability to take charge of their own health and well-being.
We are headed toward .....you will take our drugs and like it society....
Keep Gov. Palin AWAY from him!
Very poorly written article. Long on rant. Short on facts.
Hard to take it seriously.
Glad to see Congress is stepping up to dealing with real serious problems.
So when is McCain going to reveal his true colors and join the rat party?
Can we kick him out? No self respecting republican would ever introduce such a bill
What the heck are you thinking Palin?
First they came for dietary supplements, next they went after aspirin. Sooner or later we will have to show a license to buy food. Go away John McCain and take you wife and daughter with you.
I’m sure they will go after DHEA, which seems to help me.
I hate to say it, but I think the VietCong beat the sense out of McCain. All RINO’s must go !

Got to get of rid of red rice yeast so pharma’s statins are in everyone’s medicine cabinets.
It works and doesn’t have the side effects of statins, at least for me at any rate. The statins were havoc.
Mcloon is truly living down to his reputation for rampant stupidity.
“...red rice yeast...”
Red rice yeast has side effects similar to Lipitor (statins). Lipitor is based on the biochemistry of red rice yeast.
Cholesterol is not a disease and does not require drugs of any kind. a cholesterol level of 250 is potentially more healthy than a cholesterol level of 150. And remember, God did not create bad cholesterol. There is no such thing.
A few minutes research would reveal that McCain has teamed up with Byron Dorgan and they are passing this off as consumer protection but it really gives the FDA control over just about everything sold as a supplement and allows companies to patent vitamins giving them complete control over the production.
That he's teamed up with Dorgan should tell you all you need to know.
Juan McLame is as evil as the POTUS. AZ folks, do your job - get rid of this POS.
“Hard to take it seriously.”
Life Extension is only reporting what has been written and reported effectively by others. Do not disregard the meat of this, if you value consumer freedom, especially regarding health care. This is a BAD bill, and will take away important freedoms. We need to take power away from the FDA (protectors of Big Pharma, not the people), not give them more.
Could you ask him to take his daughter along as well?
That's the problem. There IS NO meat in this article, only hand-wringing and finger pointing.
I just did some googling and found an article that is substantive. This is an good example of how to write an article:
Brief description of the provisions of the Dietary Supplement Safety Act of 2010
New Requirements from Suppliers to Retailers
Suppliers and retailers regardless of size all along the chain of commerce are required to obtain adequate written evidence from the seller that the product is registered as required. That evidence must be retained in a file available for inspection.
Adverse Event Reporting (AER)
Requires reporting of all adverse events, not just serious adverse events. In addition, a compilation of non-serious AERs must be submitted annually, and records must be maintained for three years.
Accepted Dietary Ingredients List
Mandates creation by the Secretary of a list of Accepted Dietary Ingredients to replace the current in commerce pre-DSHEA test.
New Dietary Ingredients (NDI)
NDIs are considered adulterated unless there is a history of use or evidence of its safety. Registrants shall maintain a scientifically reasonable substantiation file available for inspection by the Secretary of Health and Human Services. Registration required 75 days prior to market.
Recall Authority
Provides immediate recall authority to the Secretary upon determination that a supplement would cause serious, adverse health consequences or death, or is adulterated or misbranded. Companies subject to a recall have the right to challenge the order in an informal hearing within 10 days. At their own expense, retailers must notify customers of such recalls.
Registration of Dietary Supplement Facilities
Dietary supplement facilities shall register with the Secretary (required information includes name, address of all facilities, trade names, list of supplements, their ingredients, and labels). Registration is annual.
