SACRAMENTO (CBS 5 / AP) ― The state controller's office on Tuesday found that California taxpayers are on the hook for more state government retiree health benefits than previously thought.
Controller John Chiang's office issued a report showing the growing divide between what the state owes retirees for health and dental benefits and what it has saved so far.
The gap has grown to nearly $52 billion, about $3.6 billion over last year's estimate.

"Even as we try to claw our way out of the recession and provide needed cash to the state's coffers, we cannot ignore the promise that we made to pay health and dental benefits for current state employees," Chiang said in a statement. "I urge lawmakers to reduce the impact on future generations by putting additional dollars into the annual payments so that we can invest those funds."

They’d be dollars ahead by simply reducing the state employee overhead now ~ maybe a 35% permanent layoff.
Simply privatize state government services. You'll have to pay current market rates for work, but you'll avoid those downstream costs.

This is the result of the Dem lawmakers buying the votes of the government unions by increasing the salaries and benefits of the union members. That’s all it is. The Dems buy government union votes and contributions with taxpayer money.

I've got some hard news for ya son....Most states in this country are there.
They aren’t paying below market rates - maybe 50 years ago, but not today. This is particularly the case because the average state government employee is largely unemployable outside of government. DMV clerks, for example, wouldn’t even make good Walmart greeters. The whole problem is the political power of the government employee unions.

DW is a full professor at a CA State University. She has a Ph.D., has authored 5 books, and published hundreds of papers. She makes less than the average administrative assistant at a big company.
She has accepted a low salary for 25 years, based on the State's promise of a good retirement package. The fact that unionized prison workers, cops, firemen, and civil servants, extorted sweetheart deals from the state is no reason to lump all state employees in the same category.
SB 670 shut down small gold mines all over the State earlier this year, allegedly because the State wasn’t updating an environmental study fast enough, but a certain Tribe didn’t want miners stumbling into marijuana plantations. And the RINOs supported the bill, and Schwarzenegger signed it.
Some folks who save for a rainy day have to be told when it is raining!
