JAL said Tuesday that it will keep its partnership with AA in the Oneworld Alliance and it rejected an offer from rival Delta Air Lines Inc.
Both U.S. carriers have been offering financial support to JAL for greater coordination on routes and ticket prices, as well as revenue sharing. JAL is Asia's second-largest carrier in terms of annual customers and destinations.
"We respect that this was an important decision for JAL and the government of Japan, and we believe they have made the right choice for JAL's many stakeholders, for Japan's national interests and for consumers traveling between Japan and the U.S.,"
In the coming days, he said, American will work with JAL's new management to finalize a joint application for trans-Pacific antitrust immunity.
JAL and American previously outlined plans to deliver to JAL commercial benefits valued at $2 billion in ongoing and incremental revenue over three years, the American statement said.
JAL was said to have favored Delta before it filed for court-led rehabilitation. But a switch to Delta and its SkyTeam global alliance might have required adjusting certain operations and might have affected JAL's restructuring plans, according to local media reports.

As a frequent flyer on AA, I am thrilled by this news.
Good! I fly American about 15,000 miles a year. I can go to Asia soon, which I would not do on United or Delta!
Too Bad for JAL. I used to fly back & forth from Australia to the US east coast & it was a horror when I got to LA and had to switch to AA. Even their business class lounges were second rate, their planes were a mess and DON’T get me started about their cabin staff.
I see that even now AA has the worst US record for on time performance and now they are starting to charge $8 to give you a blanket on long flights.
I think I would prefer to take my chances on Air Inshallah.
Agreed. It’s hard to say whether I avoid JAL because they connect with AA or vice versa. Staying with ANA and Star Alliance.
I flew 80 thousand miles on AA last year and am quite happy with them. Believe or not I only had one delay that mattered, and it was weather related.
If I'm not mistaken they aren't the first in the US to charge for a blanket.
Also, it is reported that the $8 will buy a passenger a blue fleece blanket, an inflatable neck pillow and a coupon good for $10 off a Bed Bath & Beyond Inc. purchase of at least $30... So you will get something out of the deal. Now if $8.00 got you the standard thread bare red blanket THAT wouyld be a rip-off.
I guess they didn't like the idea of Tokyo to Nagoya flights having a 4 hour layover in Atlanta.
Delta already inherited Japan routes from Northwest Airlines in the merger.
The only reason I can see for the agreement with JAL is to monopolize the pacific routes and freeze out American Airlines.
The airlines are playing hardcore.
Not only the airlines:
The largest airline in Asia was declared bankrupt in January and is struggling to rebuild its finances and image - which it fears will be tarnished even further if its stewardesses’ sought-after uniforms get onto the black market.
The outfits, early versions of which were designed by Hanae Mori, are incredibly popular among fans with a uniform fetish and can command exorbitant prices on on-line auction sites.
