Authorities launched a criminal investigation Monday into the cause of an explosion that killed five people at a power plant under construction, saying they couldn't rule out negligence.

It was union labor, of course there was negligence involved. I heard on the TV they have been working for years to build this plant. My guess is some union hack wanted to keep the union jobs going and made a miscalculation.

Improper venting of natural gas and welding in close proximity is my guess.
Too early to say, but it sounds as if maybe they were clearing the gas out of the pipes by blowing it out without flaring it off properly.
Also they were working on a weekend, people were probably on time-and-a-half and maybe not as rested or alert as they should have been. Maybe some of them on double shift?

Does anyone remember the Texas city blast back in the 40’s or 50’s? If not, do a search on that one!
Unions guys working on Saturday?
They were hung-over from Friday night.
They get paid on Friday, feel like crap on Saturday but what the hey, they get paid to feel like crap! Fehgedaboutit.....
I thought natural gas was to blame.
It’s been known to happen, when the first minimill
was being built they had all kinds of problems and
traced it back to hardhats in the pipes.
“but it sounds as if maybe they were clearing the gas out of the pipes by blowing it out”
From what I heard that is exactly what they were doing.
