Smoke the Bigots Out of the Closet
By FRANK RICH Published: February 6, 2010 A funny thing happened after Adm. Mike Mullen called for gay men and lesbians to serve openly in the military: A curious silence befell much of the right. If this were a Sherlock Holmes story, it would be the case of the attack dogs that did not bark.
John McCain, commandeering the spotlight as usual, did fulminate against the repeal of dont ask, dont tell. But the press focus on McCain, the crazy man in Washingtons attic, was misleading. His yapping was an exception, not the rule.
Many of his Republican colleagues said little or nothing. The rights noise machine was on mute. The Fox News report on Mullens testimony was fair and balanced and brief. The network dropped the subject entirely in the Hannity-OReilly hothouse of prime time that night. Only ratings-desperate CNN gave a fleeting platform to the old homophobic clichés.
Michael OHanlon, an expert from the Brookings Institution, speculated that 18-year-old, old-fashioned, testosterone-laden soldiers who are tough guys might object to those practicing alternative forms of lifestyle, which he apparently views as weak and testosterone-deficient.
His only prominent ally was the Family Research Council, which issued an inevitable action alert demanding a stop to the sexualization of our military.

Majority of US service personnel are opposed to allowing gays in military, Mr. Rich. As such, sthu!
Whoever tries it will be politically radioactive. Maybe that’s why the collective response on the right has been more of a shocked gasp than anything else.
On this issue, I am out ‘of the closet’ - which means I believe you should be ‘back in the closet’.
See how ‘in your face’ I can be?
;-)
I remember 1993 when the country was sane.
"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find only things evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." - Manuel II Palelogus
Its the result of individuals in the entertainment industry, media industry, and public schools promoting this that caused this.
Take those over, and you’ve got it made. Its a project conservatives should look into.
Almost like it's being done on purpose, ain't it?
Scouts Out! Cavalry Ho!
“One wonders why they desperately need our approval.”
Because even they aren’t so sure that they are doing the right thing by promoting this lifestyle. If you were sure that you were doing the right thing, you would press on despite people talking you down. If you weren’t, opposition to your beliefs would threaten your outlook on life in a way that would give you an unbearable amount of anxiety.
Just because the MSM doesn’t report something, doesn’t mean it didn’t happen.
You may be right.
Happy birthday, it's my grandson's birthday too - He's hit the big 1 0.
I told him that now he's in the double digits the years will start to fly by.
This is going to be a mess.
Will all the “hate law” protections evolve to homosexual practitioners in the military? How do you give an order to an openly gay soldier that can't be twisted into discrimination?
Yep. They are trying force shape the minds of America using official locked down government companies.
It’s absolutely illegal and Mullen is a mental coward.
To let the gays shape the consciousness of the army away from work and towards perverted politics is pure unadulterated corruption.
lol
My son is an airman in the Navy and he says his base is about 99% against this. The spit will hit the fan if this goes thru, IMO
Is this Gay Army the one that Napolitano and Obama plan to use for “military activities in the United States”?

McCain isn’t crazy, he’s dishonest. A year ago he was for repealing don’t ask don’t tell because he was running for president. Today he’s facing a primary challenge from his right, so he’s against repealing DADT. He’s just a political whore, which is why he needs to be replaced by someone with morals.
Homosexuality is, by definition, abnormal.
Meaning that if homosexuality is, as Rich claims, an "immutable identity", it is a birth defect -- a disability.
As such, it is to be tolerated, not celebrated. And the military is not obliged to accept it, just as they are not obliged to recruit quadraplegics.
