Chicago immigrants urged to participate in census
Updated at 05:46 PM today

February 6, 2010 (CHICAGO) (WLS) -- A census campaign kicked off Saturday aimed at encouraging immigrant households in Chicago to be counted.

The Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights introduced its "New Americans Count" initiative Saturday on the city's Southwest Side.

The organization wants to reach 66,000 immigrant households in the city and suburbs to make sure they are represented in this year's census.

Billions of federal dollars get reimbursed to states based on the census count.

"Everyone counts, everyone needs to be counted, because our destiny in common ... Our full human potential," said Jesus "Chuy" Garcia, a Cook Co. commissioner nominee.

Census Bureau representatives were on hand at the event Saturday, and volunteers went door-to-door in the Pilsen neighborhood encouraging immigrants to be counted.

They may be “new” U.S. citizens but they are not AMERICANS. Being an American is a state of mind. You can’t get it with a piece of paper.

I’m hearing that they are using the census as a ploy to smoke out illegal immigrants so they and their families can be deported. And I’m telling every one I know about it.

No. Dead voters are what you have in every city with an ACORN office.

Chitcago and Crook County are way ahead of that. Here, it’s the pets of dead illegal alien felons voting twice.

Well, to GW they WERE/ARE "new Americans".

We are now one of the largest Spanish-speaking nations in the world. We're a major source of Latin music, journalism and culture.

Just go to Miami, or San Antonio, Los Angeles, Chicago or West New York, New Jersey ... and close your eyes and listen. You could just as easily be in Santo Domingo or Santiago, or San Miguel de Allende.

For years our nation has debated this change -- some have praised it and others have resented it. By nominating me, my party has made a choice to welcome the new America.

Our future cannot be separated from the future of Latin America.

As I speak, we are celebrating the success of democracy in Mexico.

George Bush from a campaign speech in Miami, August 2000.

You can read the speech here.

Here is an excerpt of a good critique of that speech:

In equating our intimate historic bonds to our mother country and to Canada with our ties to Mexico, W. shows a staggering ignorance of the civilizational facts of life. The reason we are so close to Britain and Canada is that we share with them a common historical culture, language, literature, and legal system, as well as similar standards of behavior, expectations of public officials, and so on. Are there any illegal immigrant websites or message boards? What if someone posted on those sites that census workers were actually ICE agents in disguise? Wonder what that would do?
