WASHINGTON – A blizzard battered the Mid-Atlantic region Saturday, with emergency crews struggling to keep pace with the heavy, wet snow that has piled up on roadways, toppled trees and left thousands without electricity.

Officials urged people to huddle at home and out of the way of emergency crews. Forecasters said the storm could be the biggest for the nation's capital in modern history.

A record 2 1/2 feet or more was predicted for Washington. As of early Saturday, 10 inches of snow was reported at the White House, while parts of Maryland and West Virginia were buried under more than 20 inches. Forecasters expected snowfall rates to increase, up to 2 inches per hour through Saturday morning.

Blizzard warnings were issued for the District of Columbia, Baltimore, parts of New Jersey and Delaware, and some areas west of the Chesapeake Bay.

I saw sandwich girl on TV, too. Plus the woman with plastic trash sacks tied to her legs. What a way to get your 15 minutes. That must be a hell of a sandwich to walk six miles. And they never did say what kind of sammich it is.

Isn’t stupid speaking now to his “DNC” crew? Apparently it was not enough snow!

It is monumental news because we are here in the epicenter of incompetence, if you hadn’t noticed.

yeppers. Pittsburgh got smacked hard. Listening to the scanner tells me even if I could get on the road it wouldnt be a good idea. I have drifts three feet deep. You can get dizzy looking at the snow since all the landmarks are buried.

i have the gas fireplace on and that will keep going in the event of a power outage. wish we had snuggies ; ) bet your younguns are excited about sledding in this. We do not OWN a sled [mine are teenagers] because it hasn’t snowed any appreciable amount in years and you couldn’t FIND neither a sled nor a snow shovel after the big snow in December.

Neighbors have already been out plowing the road with their four wheelers here. They’ll prolly be out again later as well. Got my generator out of the garage and under a tarp next to the house “just in case” with about 28 hrs of gas at the ready.

In big cities, the problem is that there’s no place to put the snow.

My mother lives in central Virginia, she told me they got 15 inches of snow last week (that hasn’t melted yet), they just got another 18 inches more, plus they are supposed to get 4 more inches today before night fall. Unreal.

Snowing like mad here on The Jersey Shore. Wifes working a 12 hour shift at the local hospital. She’ll probably have to stay overnight. Damn global warming....

Wow! Does this mean that Odumbo will actually have to stay at home for a day or two?

Thank you Lord.

Yeee-Hawh!
Here in NW Lower Michigan we have a dearth of snow this year.
Two feet of snow brings everyone out to ski, snowshoe, and drive our gas-guzzling Dodge Hemi Ram 4-wheel-drives around, polluting the atmosphere.

Oh, by the way. Was AlGore anywhere in the vicinity for this?

Approx. 17 inches of global warming here in Monmouth County NJ. More global warming coming down, and drifting.

Gore's another hump.

Year in and year out, the Great Plains states suffer extreme blizzards, and they take it in stride

You are so right. When I was a kid (long ago) they would tie a rope between the barn and the back door of the house so that the men wouldn't get lost in a blizzard when going to the barn to tend to the livestock.

We dodged the bullet here in extreme Southern Maryland, near Patuxent Naval Air Station, due to hours of sleet last night. Looks like we have less than a foot so far.

Still have power, so no complaints. Just got back from the Lawton, Oklahoma ice storm, where thousands of trees were snapped, multiple power outages, many traffic lights out, and thick ice everywhere.

I’ve been in the DC area my whole life. Don’t remember so many significant snowfalls in one winter...and I’m kind of old.

Here in the Pacific Northwest thanks to it being an El Nino year our Spring started about six weeks ago. It was the warmest January on record, and February is starting out the same. We had no snow at all all winter except for what fell in the mountains.
