A special NBC Black History Month lunch spread -- featuring fried chicken, collard greens and black-eyed peas -- sparked a commissary controversy yesterday, but the African-American chef who planned it doesn't understand the fuss.
"All I wanted to do was make a meal that everyone would enjoy -- and that I eat myself," NBC cook Leslie Calhoun told The Post last night.

Here’s one (not quite) rich, white Yankee who loves that stuff too.
However, I think I was a southerner in a previous life.
Whats to complain about? That sounds like one of my favorite meals!
Don't even get me started on desserts, I'm having to wipe down my monitor from the drool flying around as I type! LOL
And grits! I love grits, fried chicken, greens not so much.
Sigh. You can’t have it both ways. If you wish to have elements of your own ethnic culture, such as an ethnic cuisine, which in fact all ethnic cultures proudly and rightfully proclaim, then when that ethnic culture is celebrated by others, including those of your own ethnicity, you simply can’t cry racism.
I’ve seen countless food shows depicting various ethnic restaurants with delectable food, including a number of soul food restaurants, complete with, gasp, African-Americans chowing down! Gosh, and not one complaint of racism about these shows.
This hyper-racism has simply got to stop. It’s akin to crying wolf, and desensitizes everyone to the legitimacy of the actual racism that still occurs in our society. In point of fact, hyper-racism itself focuses on emphasizing the differences of people rather than their similarities and is counter-productive to a harmonious society.
Hyper-racism is simply another form of exploitation, and Obama himself could say these sorts of words I’ve written here when egregious hyper-racism makes it to the main stream media level if he really wanted to promote improved race relations. As an African-American, Obama as President, is in the perfect position in which he could actively promote racial healing by making this a point of emphasis in almost every major speech. But he never does. Why is that?
To almost any objective analyst of society, it’s evident that exploitative hyper-racism is deliberately promoted by the ultra-left as a means of further alienating and isolating certain groups in an effort to herd them into, and keep them, in their own camp. The ultra-left actually cares not one whit for these groups. They simply want their votes, and of course their “cause”. Furthermore, it’s to the advantage of the ultra-left to keep these groups in perpetual poverty and ignorance in order to maintain that “cause” and the unwitting servitude of these groups to the ultra-left.
Butter makes it better!
“Ill eat them all. I havent tried the Clampetts favorite, dandelion greens yet”...
Me either. Have not had lambs quarter either, but I do love all the greens. Especially love poke salet-Hog Maw with tobassco sauce and pinto beans.
Oh yeah. I’m a white guy too.

“Collard greens are tasteless compared to turnip greens. I had some turnip greens last night that had so much flavor I didnt even reach for the pepper sauce.”
YES! turnip greens are the best! yum!
Say what you will, this was hilarious....
“The menu is not racist - its typical southern black food.”
It is also typical southern white food. Damn good too!
Oh,the humanity, what next Chinese food on Chinese New Year!
“...dandelion greens yet...My mother used to cook dandelions and serve them in salads all the time.
There is an ethnic joke italians used to tell each other:
Q.How do you keep the italians off the highway medians?
A.”Eliminate the dandelions.”

Bull crap. Every time I am invited to dine with black friends or associates, the hostess proudly serves fried chicken, black eyed peas, corn bread, greens, beans and ham hocks or similar fare and, yes, watermellon in season. What a crock of snivelling disturbers.
If I want grits for breakfast I have to drive 35 miles to Indiana or Ohio.
It's like grits were outlawed in Mi! You just can't find it on any breakfast menu in this state.
Several things I don't miss...’country ham’ ( I'd rather eat a salt block ) and boiled peanuts.
Don't forget that you can make wine from the blossoms and roast and grind the roots as a coffee substitute.
God forbid this poor lady serves ham & cabbage on St. Patrick’s Day. She’s the only sane person in this story.
Throw some okra on the table, if you please.
