As Warming Melts Arctic Ice, U.S. Navy Races to Control New Territory

U.S. Navy plans a carrot and stick approach for resource rivals, while trying to internally do its part to combat climate change

The warming of our world is melting the ice that traditionally has covered the Arctic raising the prospect of the first mostly ice-free Arctic summer in centuries.  This offers some benefits -- access to new underwater resources, shipping routes, and faster travel routes.  However, it also offers a greatly heightened risk of territorial conflicts.

Five nations are competing heavily for the resource of the Arctic -- the United States, Russia, Canada, Denmark, and China.  A number of others are eying the region as well, which may contain more than 160 billion barrels of oil.

A leading armed forces publication, the Navy Times, interviewed

U.S. Navy officials about how they are preparing for the changes -- and the race that will follow.  Rear Adm. David Titley, oceanographer of the Navy, states, "The Arctic is changing, and it is changing rapidly.  If the Navy does not start looking at this today … we could wake up in seven or eight years and find ourselves way behind the power curve."

Recently, climatologists have bumped estimates of ice free summers from the end of the twenty-first century to about 2030. "Ice free" is defined as a summer in which their are several weeks in which there is less than 10 percent aerial ice coverage.

Saw that a couple of days about the Exxon rig deal. Those are classified “elephant hunters”. We can only hope the nope and change greenies don’t cede the Arctic reserves to the Soviets, et al.

A Canadian biologist/ Geo scientist, Patteron while attempting to uncover fluctuations in fish populations uncovered the cause of the earths cooling warming cycle and proved conclusively that CO2 is the not the cause.

A summary of his finding which first appeared in the Canadian Ecomomist in 07 can be found in http://www.theusmat.com/ with a link to the original story which must be requested.

One of the most telling aspects of ClimberGate (my abbreviation of what she calls "Studentdissertation....gate") is that the entire claim had to rely on recent anecdotes.
Are we to believe that there were zero technical studies on mountain ice?
Color me skeptical. I have a hunch that none of the technical studies had the "right" conclusions.

United States, Russia, Canada, Denmark, and China.

Which one of these things doesn't belong?

The shrinking ice peaked in 2007. In 2008 peak winter ice was more extensive and in 2009 more extensive yet.

I read a story about some enviros who sailed the Northwest Passage last summer to prove it was "open." They had a close call when they were surrounded by sea ice. Only a lucky change in the winds saved their vessel. :-))

That’s not it.. The article reviewed to in my website goes into the method and the science Patterson used to arrive at his definitive conclusion CO2 is not the cause of global warming which is in the link I provided.

I prefer to use this scientific explanation debunking CO2 because it is simple, easy to understand, and it was done by someone who didn’t have a horse in the CO2 debunking race. It was an accidental discovery on which the author Patterson, did not even put his name to it ,The “Patterson Effect” I did. Its Pure science.

Regarding the main issue of the post. What are all these nations going to do if the Arctic Ocean freezes up dramatically over the next twenty or thirty years.

since liberals would not allow the USA to access any minerals and oil/gas etc. that may exist in the region, we may as well leave it all to countries who will do something useful with it (kidding, sort of, but not about the first part)

“thought it would be nice to have the article”

Yea, I wanted it to support my review as well. The original was posted in FR’s (Drudge also carried it) showing the Financial Post June 07 origination. That narrative went into detail how Patterson arrived at his conclusions when I posted my review. After a month or so I morgued (stored) the story. When I refiled (re-posted), the link to the original was gone.
While keeping the title The National Post dropped it for some reason and worked up a re-write which is what you see now..
All of the current google listings to the story carrys the C.N.P. current offering including Wickipedia but not the original article which was far more interesting.

“Ice Free”??

Dude, last summer, the Top Gear boys filmed a 400 mile CAR vs Dog race to the North Pole.

The CARS won, btw, .... and it sure didn’t look “Ice Free” to me.
