Homemade Sled Rocket Explodes, Man Hospitalized
Don't try this at home. The Oakland County Sheriffs Department says a 62-year-old Independence Township man tried to make his own rocket backpack and ended up in the hospital with severe burns and an eye injury.
Investigators were told by those attending the party that the man is "known for doing crazy things at his annual sledding party."
Investigators say after consuming an unknown quantity of alcohol on Saturday night, the man constructed a device out of a motorcycle muffler filled with gunpowder and gasoline. He strapped the device to his back, donned a plastic garbage bag as a cap and a helmet, and asked another person to light a wick as he began to sled down the hill.
During the ride, the device exploded, causing 2nd degree burns to the victim's face and 18% of his body.
No one else was hurt.
Criminal charges are possible.
What he thought...
What he got...
He really, really wanted to join the Air Force.
< |x)~
What are they going to charge him with? Terminal stupidity?
Just make him pay his own medical bills. Between that and the pain of the burns he just might learn his lesson, although that is doubtful. There isn't much hope for anyone who tries a stupid college age stunt after drinking that much, like a stupid college age student, at 62.
"Alcohol, gunpowder and gasoline is no way to make a rocket sled, son."
