Accused 9/11 plotter likely to face execution

Accused Sept. 11 plotter Khalid Sheikh Mohammed will be tried and convicted and is likely to be executed, White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said on Sunday. Interviewed on CNN's "State of the Union," show, Gibbs said: "Khalid Sheikh Mohammed is going to meet justice and he's going to meet his maker. He will be brought to justice and he's likely to be executed for the heinous crimes he committed."

Gibbs did not confirm reports that the Obama administration has begun looking for places other than the heart of New York City to prosecute self-professed mastermind Mohammed and four accused co-conspirators in the face of fierce criticism tied to security and costs.

"We are talking with the authorities in New York. We understand their logistical concerns," Gibbs said. "We will work with them and come to a solution that we think will bring about justice."

Appearing on NBC's "Meet the Press," senior White House adviser David Axelrod said President Barack Obama still wanted Mohammed and the other Sept. 11 defendants to be tried in the U.S. justice system.

"The president believes we need to take into consideration what the local authorities are saying. But he also believes this: He believes that we ought to bring Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and all others who are involved in terrorist acts to justice, swift and sure, in the American justice system."...

Republican Senate leader Mitch McConnell, also on CNN, said the accused plotters should be tried by a military commission, preferably at the U.S. military prison in Guantanamo Bay in Cuba. He said Republicans would deny the administration the funding to mount a trial in New York and predicted that many Democrats would join them.

"Interrogate them, detain them and try them in a military commission offshore at Guantanamo," McConnell said....

If "innocent until proven guilty," as a fundamental principle, has any validity, then how is it that the person responsible for "executing" the laws can speak, with certainty, of the guilt of the defendant and the outcome of such a trial without destroying the very basis of the constitutional justice system?

That was my point - but of course, you said it much better than I - great post!

Add to that Holder’s statement that KSM won’t be released even if acquitted. Maybe he wants to taint the jury pool, if not America has some really dumb lawyers in high places.

Perfect illustration of the O Admin “upholding American values” — they are going to be prosecutor, judge, jury and executioner in a Kangaroo Court.

Makes ya proud!

I predict he’ll have a quick illness and die soon in prison, or he’ll commit “suicide”. Living, he is a continuing embarrassment to the administration.

Ummm...can you tell us to whom you are referring? Your statement is open to interpretation.

1) Obama and his crew want to try KSM in civilian court.

2) Obama is making it impossible to secure a conviction in civilian court by so publicly prejudging the case.

It has to be assumed Obama and company want KSM to walk.

Thank you. If the constitutional justice system which has served this nation for over 200 years is undermined in such a flagrant manner by those elected to protect and defend the Constitution's principles, how is it to be repaired?

To prevent such a potential for undermining would seem to be better than to be faced with such a possibility.

Someone please explain to me. As I understand, the jury will decide the sentence if he is convicted. What if the jury decided life in prison?

Read that Zer0 was offering $200,000,000 to any community willing to take on this idiocy.

Also read that Congress may very well reject any funding at all for the trial.

Although the military charges have been withdrawn, they can also be re-introduced.

HELLO Gitmo!

How can you have a supposedly fair trial if the verdict is predeterminined? The Obama admin does and says so many illogical things it’s hard to keep track of them.

Talk about jury influence. If I were the Sheik’s attorney,
I would be preparing an appeal already — you do not publicly say stuff like this immediately before a trial. He could be liable for jury tampering.

These statements by Gibbs and Obama himself about executing KSM are asinine. If KSM is tried in a US court these statements could well be used by his defense to show he cannot get a fair trial when even the President has publicly said he was guilty and that jurors would be tainted if they had heard this.

....wonder what libs are going to do when KSM is found innocent and walks out of court a free man.

Pronouncing him “guilty” now defeats the purpose of a “fair” trial by an “impartial” jury.

The funny part is when KSM is found innocent, he’ll be able to sue CNN and the President of the US for that matter for slander/libel.

Well maybe they are saying such things so the case will be thrown out and let him go?

Attaway to go, Baghdad Bob. You just tainted the jury pool everywhere and gave the dirtbag lawyers grounds for appeal. They are going way overboard to throw this case.

My prediction is KSM gets off on a technicality.

Barry is worse than a fool - he is an enemy of my country - if there isn’t strong resistance in Congress to stop him by the Republicans, then we will see that they are no better than evil co-conspirators. It will really be up to the People then.

Hasn’t KSM proven to be a valuable intelligence asset (after waterboarding)?

KSM's defense attorneys will run with this statement.

The Administration has given KSM and his buddies Constitutional rights that include the PRESUMPTION OF INNOCENCE! Way to go Gibbs!

If they get a Civilian trial, they will probably be freed. Thank you Gibbs and Obama... the two stupidest people who ever lived.

Apparently, if New York declines, the plan supposedly is to have the trials in one of the other two areas where the planes crashed on 9/11. Pittsburgh is the closest venue to Shanksville (Somerset) PA where Flight 93 crashed. And of course, DC is where the plane crashed into the Pentagon.
