Searching for the Next Iowa
Ethanol producer magzine ^ | February 2010 Issue | Kris Bevill

U.S. for two things: corn and ethanol. The state is home to 39 ethanol production facilities and boasts more than 3 billion gallons of annual production capacity, according to the Iowa Renewable Fuels Association. The most recent data from the Iowa Corn Growers Association shows that in 2008, 2.1 billion bushels of corn—82 percent of the entire U.S. crop—were harvested from Iowa fields. Iowa has earned its reputation for corn and ethanol and the two have served the state well. But while corn yields continue to increase year to year, the number of corn ethanol plants is expected to stabilize. The plants that exist now will probably continue to produce corn-based ethanol for many years, and at increasing levels as technologies improve. The demand for ethanol, however, specifically cellulosic ethanol, will increase at a faster rate, which means Iowa and other Corn Belt states may soon share the ethanol spotlight with some unexpected candidates.

Corn is for eatin' and drinkin'.

GASOLINE is for powering motor vehicles.

As well they should.

Because ethanol-free gas yields about 15% better mpg.

In my car, it's the difference between 26 mpg and 30 mpg.

?????

Iowa’s 2.4 billion bushels of corn is NOT 82% of the USA’s 13-14 billion bushels.

And half of Iowa’s crop is exported, IIRC.

Here too and it’s the only place I buy gas. The price is actually about the same as the lowest priced gas with ethanol but gives considerably better gas mileage, at least ten percent more MPG. Ethanol is a bad deal all the way around so we are probably stuck with it, if it actually made sense the government wouldn’t go along with it.

They may have meant that Iowa produces 82 percent of the corn that goes into ethanol production since they have so many processing plants in the state. Probably just another case of careless writing, it is quite common now. I spend a large part of my time trying to figure out just what people are TRYING to say and sometimes I wonder if they even know what they are trying to say.

I try to live by the following motto. The mere fact that you think you know what you are attempting to say is no guarantee that you are communicating it to the reader (or the listener).

There I must take exception. It's not a bad deal for ADM.
