People have to be ready to take care of themselves(OR)

What is Esten Chenault smoking? I couldn’t believe what I read in his anti-gun statement: “We don’t need guns anymore than anyone else. We have 911.” (Jan. 26 letter) Is this writer even living in the real world? Perhaps not.

I have already addressed the myths about 911, police protection, and personal security (including Homeland Security) in a previous 2009 letter to the Herald and News.

Some people just refuse to get it. Perhaps Richard W. Stevens’ authoritative article, “Just Dial 911? The Myth of Police Protection” posted at www.jpfo.org will finally rebut these distorted and dangerous myths about placing one’s life in somebody else’s hands.

Again, this anti-gun victimology indoctrination is false, dangerous, and even subversive to our constitutional republic.

Previously I have asserted the cheapest, most affordable, and economical investment available to the private citizen is a .38 caliber revolver or other firearm. Being proficient, competent, knowledgeable and safe with such weapon defines personal autonomy, including homeland security. Thus the citizen remains his or her own first line of defense and own private body guard.

“We don’t need guns anymore than anyone else. We have 911.”

Baloney. Best quip I've ever heard along those lines, "When seconds count, the police are just minutes away."

I love those ADT commercials where the potential victim goes running for the phone and the seconds versus minutes timing is so obvious.

Best quip I've ever heard along those lines, "When seconds count, the police are just minutes away."

I also like:

"I carry a gun, because I can't carry a cop."

or

"A gun in the hand is better than a cop on the phone."

Yes, and I note that the criminal(s) ALWAYS run away. Who’s to say they may not just grab their intended victim and take off in a car? An alarm isn’t nearly as effective as an alarm and a gun - or two.

DRILL SERGEANT JOE B. FRICK’S RULES FOR A GUN, KNIFE, BASEBALL BAT OR FIST FIGHT

1. Forget about knives, bats and fists. Bring a gun. Preferably, bring at least two guns. Bring all of your friends who have guns. Bring four times the ammunition you think you could ever need.

2. Anything worth shooting is worth shooting twice. Ammunition is cheap - life is expensive. If you shoot inside, buckshot is your friend. A new wall is cheap - funerals are expensive

3. Only hits count. The only thing worse than a miss is a slow miss.

4. If your shooting stance is good, you’re probably not moving fast enough or using cover correctly.

5. Move away from your attacker and go to cover. Distance is your friend. (Bulletproof cover and diagonal or lateral movement are preferred.)

6. If you can choose what to bring to a gunfight, bring a semi or full-automatic long gun and a friend with a long gun.

7. In ten years nobody will remember the details of caliber, stance, or tactics. They will only remember who lived.

8. If you are not shooting, you should be communicating, reloading, and running. Yell “Fire!” Why “Fire”? Cops will come with the Fire Department, sirens often scare off the bad guys, or at least cause then to lose concentration and will.... and who is going to summon help if you yell “Intruder,” “Glock” or “Winchester?”

9. Accuracy is relative: most combat shooting standards will be more dependent on “pucker factor” than the inherent accuracy of the gun.

10. Someday someone may kill you with your own gun, but they should have to beat you to death with it because it is empty.

11. Always cheat, always win. The only unfair fight is the one you lose.

12. Have a plan.

13. Have a back-up plan, because the first one won’t work. “No battle plan ever survives 10 seconds past first contact with an enemy.”

14. Use cover or concealment as much as possible, but remember, sheetrock walls and the like stop nothing but your pulse when bullets tear through them.

15. Flank your adversary when possible. Protect yours.

16. Don’t drop your guard.

17. Always tactical load and threat scan 360 degrees. Practice reloading one-handed and off-hand shooting. That’s how you live if hit in your “good” side.

18. Watch their hands. Hands kill. Smiles, frowns and other facial expressions don’t (In God we trust. Everyone else keep your hands where I can see them.)

19. Decide NOW to always be aggressive ENOUGH, quickly ENOUGH.

20. The faster you finish the fight, the less shot you will get.

21. Be polite. Be professional. But, have a plan to kill everyone you meet if necessary, because they may want to kill you.

22. Be courteous to everyone, overly friendly to no one.

23. Your number one option for personal security is a lifelong commitment to avoidance, deterrence, and de-escalation.

24. Do not attend a gunfight with a handgun, the caliber of which does not start with anything smaller than “4”.

25. Use a gun that works EVERY TIME. “All skill is in vain when an Angel blows the powder from the flintlock of your musket.” At a practice session, throw you gun into the mud, then make sure it still works. You can clean it later.

26. Practice shooting in the dark, with someone shouting at you, when out of breath, etc.

27. Redardless of whether justified of not, you will feel sad about killing another human being. It is better to be sad than to be room temperatire.

28. The only thing you EVER say afterwards is, “He said he was going to kill me. I beleived him. I’m sorry, Officer, but I’m very upset now. I can’t say anything more. Please speak with my attorney.”

Finally, Drill Sergeant Frick’s Rules For Un-armed Combat.

1: Never be unarmed.

2: If you have your hands, your feet, your mind and your Spirit as an American Soldier, Sailor, Airman, Marine or Coastie, you are never unarmed.

1a. And grenades. Bring plenty of grenades. You never know when they might be useful - Just ask Jayne Cobb...

re: “We don’t need guns anymore than anyone else. We have 911.”

And of course the corollary, “We don’t need fire extinguishers. We have 911.”

Sick of all the lip.

Attempt to disarm us, or shut up.

We’re ready when you are.

I carry in every state that I visit, regardless of their laws. I carry everywhere I go in day-to-day life, regardless of signs on doors.

Back when my husband and I first met, he was nervous about me doing so and I told him that I would rather face a judge or jury anyday and tell them why I chose to arm myself rather than have you and my kids view me in a coffin and cry because I didn't.

And of course the increasingly popular...”we don’t NEED jobs, we have OBAMA!! When faced with an intruder in your home, people only use pistols or rifles because they don’t have a shotgun. A 12 gauge with #2 or #3 buckshot will make a near instant stop...and puddle. That’s BUCK, not bird. Ducks rarely threaten families.

It’s true! Furthermore, Oregon can repeal all the taxes on the little people because they just stuck it to The Man this week.

You may want to edit #24 I think there are too many “nots” in that statement.

Here is my solution. Any anti-gun person should just refuse to own a gun and be required by law to post a no-gun zone sign on their property. Natural selection will take care of the rest.

An exception could be made for households with children in them.

Yea, my response to the ADT commercials is that a decent sized revolver will also call the cops for you, if you have neighbors anywhere around.

We don’t need guns anymore than anyone else. We have 911.

The view afforded from his parents' basement window.

Frowning takes 68 muscles.
Smiling takes 6.
Pulling this trigger takes 2.
I'm lazy.

The other thing I laugh at the ADT commercial about is the potential victim’s first instinct is to run to answer the phone. Very inconvenient time to answer a call from a pollster or phone soliciter.

Or maybe it is ADT and they ask if you want to upgrade your system or bundle with your cable and water bill:)

LOL! Yep, alarm goes off, the phone which is right by her side immediately rings and the operator says "help is on the way"...... Its just plain stupid.

I admire your attitude and I agree, but I wouldn’t broadcast that information.
