The Republicans are blessed with a strong candidate: Mark Kirk, a five-term Congressman and Naval officer still active in the reserves (he returned this month from his second tour of duty in Afghanistan). Mr Kirk is all but certain to win Tuesdays GOP primary.
A moderate with appeal to the independents who polls suggest are wavering in their support for the Democrats, he has alienated the more conservative Tea Party wing of his party. Last year he tried unsuccessfully to secure backing from Sarah Palin, the former vice-presidential candidate and erstwhile governor of Alaska, when she was in Chicago. Nevertheless, faced with the enticing prospect of humiliating Mr Obama, the Tea Party-goers are likely to support him.
What say you fella Freepers? I was for Kirk until I read more about him. Now
I’m back at square one. They’re all questionable and what are “Log Cabin Republicans?
Kirk lost me when he voted yes on cap & tax.
Hughes is the conservative candidate that I’m voting for.
Kirk is an idealogical liberal Republican who voted against the surge which worked in Iraq, he voted against any limits on abortion, he supports the gay activist agenda. There are libs in the military and he is one and he isn’t a moderate. He has never been. We have an opportunity to elect Patrick Hughes a common uncommon man who has ran a business and is a solid mainstream conservative. Kirk is not the kind of Senator we need, his election would make him the most liberal Republican in the Senate.
