US Congress to investigate Toyota after 19 deaths

The US House of Representatives has announced an investigation into Toyota’s faulty accelerator pedals and other problems that may have caused 19 deaths over the past decade and triggered a global recall of nearly eight million vehicles.

A month from now Toyota will face a cross-examination from the House Committee on Energy and Commerce over whether it responded soon enough to reports that accelerator pedals could become stuck.

The committee has sent letters to Toyota’s American subsidiary requesting documents and e-mails related to the matter.

Information has also been requested from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which alleges that “sudden acceleration” problems in Toyota cars have led to 19 fatalities.

More than one million British motorists who drive Toyota cars are still waiting to be told whether their vehicles are potentially dangerous after Japanese company announced yesterday that the recall would spread to Europe.

There are fears that cars may continue to accelerate after drivers have taken their foot off the pedal.

It is understood that about two million of the cars that could be recalled would be in Europe, where company sources have admitted there have been 26 reported instances of the defect.

We need to investigate the U.S. Congress.

Or better yet, Send them home permanently this November.

It would be hard for a company like Chrysler to have 8 million recalls since they haven't sold that many cars for a while.

In normal business circles, wouldn't it be considered unethical and unseemly for the board of directors of a car company to "grill" officers of a competitor?

Congress should recuse itself from anything to do with car companies until it divests itself of Government Motors and Gettlefinger Motors.

One of the government perks owning a car company is you can always “investigate” the competitors.

So who didn’t know to watch the floor mat, it might get caught under the accelerator.

I’d be interested to know what or if the “on the Q-T” any impetus behind this might be at the behest or in deference to the UAW.....since they’d surely appreciate a larger marke share here in the US.....

Well, Toyota dug themselves a hole, no doubt. But my instincts are the same as yours on this...

Time to take down Government Motors/Chrysler competition. Install a Union (UAW) and make them move to Detroit to keep better watch over them.

I am sure Congress has the engineering expertise to do a better job getting to the root cause of the problem than the Toyota engineers.

"I can say this no car I have built has ever had their accelerator pedal stick much less accelerate. "

Can you translate that into English, please? Are you an employee of an automaker?

Well, sure. It's right there in the Constitution, after the "Congeress shall oversee Major League Baseball to ensure that no steroids are used" part.
