SEOUL (AFP) – North Korea Friday fired artillery into the sea near its disputed border with South Korea for the third successive day, Seoul's military said.

The communist state fired 20 shells between 7:50 am (2250 GMT Thursday) and 11:50 am," a spokesman for the Joint Chiefs of Staff told AFP.

He said shells landed in the North's territory north of South Korea's Yeonpyeong island. They dropped further away from the borderline than on Wednesday and Thursday.

This would escalate fast if both sides start hitting the other’s land with their artillery. They may keep on firing into the water close to the sea demarcation line. They may even go slightly over it. However, I don’t think they will hit S. Korean islands in earnest unless they decided to land troops on one of those islands.

If things were escalating, you would see massive troops at the DMZ. You are not seeing that. Read 44 steps of Escalation by Herman Kahn

After Kahn, next up Strategy in the Missile Age, Bernard Brodie. Then Nuclear Weapons and Foreign Policy, Henry Kissinger.
