Less than two weeks ago, the shape of the Republican U.S. Senate primary in California changed dramatically when former Rep. and liberal GOPer Tom Campbell announced he would become the third major Republican in the race.

In abandoning his bid for the GOP nomination for governor, the 57-year-old Campbell joins State Assemblyman Chuck DeVore and former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina in the battle for nomination to oppose Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer this November.

At first glance, the seasoned observer of Golden State Republican politics is tempted to shrug and say “Who cares?”

“You have stupid Republicans picking candidates because they have name recognition and don’t do anything to educate themselves about the candidates and their records. And they deserve what they get coming to them.”

Candidates have to do their part to make themselves known to the people. That’s how it works in the real world (remember how the previously unknown Brown shook hands in the cold outside of Fenway Park?). Ugly candidates don’t have a chance even if they are brilliant and competent. Again, that’s life.

This is good news for DeVore. Let Fiorina and Campbell split the liberal GOP vote.

Having Tom Campbell as a California Senator would be LIGHT YEARS better than “Mamm” Boxer. And right now, it looks like a good possibility. GET REAL, FOLKS!

------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the immortal words of Senator Byrd: "WRONG! WRONG! WRONG!" Campbell would only be marginally better than Boxer. He was one of the worst RINO's in the House.

I would not consider him trustworthy enough to even caucus with the Republicans: he voted against the House Republican nominee for speaker one year. If the Republicans should take control of the Senate by a single vote, he'd be highly likely to switch to independent or Rat, and vote with the Rats to organize the Senate.

Campbell is staunchly and consistently pro-abortion and pro-gay. Given his leftist views on social issues, he would not be a reliable vote for conservative judges in the upcoming Republican administration.
