This would have been 100 times better had they bothered to identify the criteria. Are these the best small towns in Texas because they are crime free? Have low taxes? Nice weather? Or are they the best small towns in Texas because they pay the highest welfare benefits and provide the most luxurious assisted housing? Most comfortable for criminals? Friendliest toward illegal aliens? I would like to know.
Many of the happiest memories remaining from my mis-spent youth involve Gruene, the Guadalupe River, an inner tube and Lone Star beer. Is that funky dance hall still there in Gruene, the oldest remaining dance hall in TX?

Just what I was telling my wife when I saw the list. Not in the desert, not in the mosquito belt. Mild climate mostly except when a norther bursts in or a hurricane pushes through the coastal plains. Plenty of friendly people too.
I would add Ft Davis and Alpine.
Would substitute Ft. Davis for Alpine.
Alpine is nice but I do not consider it small.
As far has small towns with charm I would put Palacios on the list. Surprised not to see Rockport and Port Aransas on the list as I see lots of motorcycles in the area when the weather is good.

A little roadside restaurant that has a buffet with the BEST chicken-fried chicken livers and deep-fried stuffed jalapenos in the world!
Not really, most of the towns are within just a few hours of the border, some are closer than that.
Jefferson, Granbury and Muenster are in East Tex or FW area, Alpine is in far west Tex (and close to the border), all the rest are Tex Hill Country, west or NW of San Antonio.
Luckenbach is nothing, but a beer joint.
I like Blanco and Terlingua.

Been to every one ... every one of them are awesome in their own right. The list could go on forever. God Bless Texas!
Gruene 10 years ago was beyond a doubt the best of the best.Even during the summer with all the tubers, it was still a great hide away. Now it’s lost a lot of its charm with the huge amount of tourists cramming the streets(it’s now a small San Antonio). Fredericksburg has always been the diamond of the hill country. As it grows, it still has kept its serenity. We stay just down the road from Becker’s and no matter how much anxiety we arrive with, Fredericksburg dissipates it and brings us back to a state of tranquility. As to Luckenbach, I don’t see it as being in the top 10 ( probably because of Willie Nelson).

In my opinion the correlation is how close they are to larger cities - still small town, but you can get to all the amenities if you want to... possible exception would be Alpine.
I love Gruene (Green for all you non-Texans) too...but I wouldn't want to live there. Can you imagine having to deal with the traffic all the time on the weekends? What a nightmare.
I’ve visited Luckenbach. It’s like 3 houses, a cafe/store/post office, and a dance hall.
Nice place to visit, but I don’t think many of us are going to be able to move there!
