Pro-Wall Street Democrat Takes On a House Veteran
NY Times ^ | January 27, 2010 | DAVID M. HALBFINGER

Posted on 01/27/2010 6:08:25 PM PST by neverdem

She’s young, she just moved into the district and she is taking on an established and popular House Democrat in a primary bid she concedes is a huge gamble. She’s also a hedge fund lawyer, and proud of it.

All that may not exactly excite liberal primary voters. But Reshma Saujani, 34, has won the backing of some prominent Democratic donors for her bid to topple Representative Carolyn B. Maloney, a challenge that is turning heads on the Upper East Side of Manhattan and antagonizing some of New York’s best-known feminists.

It is a campaign steeped in identity politics — Ms. Saujani says she is the first Indian-American woman to run for Congress, and she is counting on South Asians to support her in droves. But perhaps more intriguing is her goal of becoming an advocate for the financial industry in the Capitol.

Ms. Saujani, in an interview, said she was “running on my Wall Street record, not from it.” She called Ms. Maloney “asleep at the wheel” for saying the economy was improving, and accused her and the entire New York Congressional delegation of failing to do enough to aid business. She said her hedge fund work was great preparation for representing the district, home to many of the financial industry’s players, and she chided Ms. Maloney for bashing banks and calling for a 100 percent tax on some bonuses.

“Instead of browbeating Wall Street, I want to invite them to help create jobs,” Ms. Saujani said, talking up an idea to connect investment houses with technology start-ups.

“If you go to Texas, you’ll never hear a Congressional member speak poorly of the oil industry,” she added. “In Michigan, you’ll never hear a Congressional member speak poorly of the auto industry. This is our bread and butter.”...

“Ms. Saujani says she is the first Indian-American woman to run for Congress...”

Completely irrelevant.

But, like Obammie the Commie, marketable to fools.

And, by the way, Mzzzzzz. Whatever....”Wall Street” is a stereotype, which is akin to bigotry. The financial sector in NY has everything from the small-time trader who’s just trying to make a living to the scumbag banksters like Goldman-Sachs and JPM — whom you will no doubt serve, like the other Dims.

I bet she’s even more pro-abortion than Baloney ever was.

The “financial industry” doesn’t NEED another advocate in Washington.

They practically OWN K Street!

Here’s a link to her campaign site:

Her “stances” on the issues have few concrete details, and LOTS of Obama-speak (”smart, effective reforms”, “long-term investments”, etc). I’m not all that familiar with Representative Maloney, but I doubt Ms. Saujani will represent a significant improvement.

She’s a Democrat - identity politics is their meat and drink.

They probably suck equally. It doesn’t get much worse than Maloney, and the best situation here is that those two will spend a lot of time and money running against each other instead of helping out other democrats in tougher districts in the state like Bill Owens, Tim Bishop, Steve Israel, Michael McMahon, John Hall, Scott Murphy, Michael Acuri, Dan Maffei, Brian Higgins, and Eric Massa. With the right candidates, all those dims can go down.

Maloney is to downtown, as Rangel is to uptown; they are like Ted Kennedy, they will die in their seats.

If she is for Wall Street; she is for Obama. Don’t let that fool you. Wonder why they want to get rid of Mahoney unless she is going to retire.

They are protecting the seat.

This article states: "Ms. Saujani says she is the first Indian-American woman to run for Congress..." Does she really claim this?

In 1994, a woman from India was elected to the Wyoming State Legislature, and instead of seeking re-election, ran for U.S. Senate. In the 1996 WY GOP primary, State Rep. Nimi McConigley finished in 4th place (out of 9 candidates).
