Teen Abortion, Pregnancy and Birth Rates Increased in 2006

Washington, DC -- Despite billions of dollars spent by national and state governments and groups like Planned Parenthood on promoting birth control and contraception, a new report issued by the Guttmacher Institute indicates teen abortion, pregnancy and birth rates all rose in 2006.

But I thought if students knew how to put a condom on a banana, this wouldn’t happen!

This does not surprise me in the least. The current generation of teens have been taught to believe that sex is just a body function like going to the bathroom or eating.

You’d think they would know what causes it by now.

They do. I’d like to know how many kids deliberately get pregnant to have someone that loves them. They don’t know how difficult raising a child is. As families get more fragmented, more kids try to manufacture their own families, not realizing how much they are contributing to the problem. I’m just not sure what percentage this type of thinking represents.

I’m sure some are getting pregnant more or less on purpose. As well, single teenagers are the least likely to use any contraceptive effectively, no matter how much they’re taught. Why should this surprise anyone? It’s what most teenagers are like.

Those who happen to be employed and married, though under 20, like some of our young military people, should not be included in “teen pregnancy as a pathology” statistics.

I’ve tuned into some show on MTV a couple times called Teen Mom. Shows like this do and don’t glorify pregnancy (they obviously show how hard it is to raise a baby and lead a ‘normal’ teenage life, but they are also say ‘Hey, you can get a TV show for making mistakes!’) and in effect, imo, will turn more teens to abortion. They see other 17-19 year olds whose lives are turned upside down by having sex. It’s not going to stop girls from getting pregnant, it’s going to lead them to kill their baby.

Not once did I see anything on the shows encouraging abstinence or waiting until marriage...just to use a condom or birth control.

Actually, even when I was still teaching HS (5 years ago) the girls did a lot of apparent girl/girl action. I think most of is was because they thought guys liked it, but of course I never engaged them in conversation about it. We are raising kids who just don’t think sex is that big a deal, and almost anyone is a suitable partner.

I used to wonder how likely kids who couldn’t remember to bring their homework to class were to use protection anyway. It’s funny to me, we treat them more and more like babies but allow them more and more adult privileges.

With predictably poor results. If people have adult freedoms without adult responsibilities and adult consequences, you end up with ... what we have now, a lot of people (most of them objectively "old enough to know better") who believe they should be able to do anything they want and have someone else clean up the mess, without even a disapproving sniff.

two words: “jersey shore”

with that said,...it is good the heterosexuality is back in vogue. Just need to work on the “wait until marriage” mantra.

These idiots and vermin can get pregnant anytime they want and kill their babies anytime they want. Meanwhile, there are mature and responsible women who are barren, can’t afford IVF, and can’t get an adoptive child. Life is a curse.

CBS did a spot on this last night. The demographics are interesting.

[snip]The number of teen pregnancies had been going down over the last decade - way down. Between 1992 and 2005, the teen pregnancy rate among black women the pregnancy rate dropped 45 percent; for Hispanic teens the fate fell 26 percent; and among whites it plummeted 50 percent.

Now all three ethnic groups see rates creeping back up - by 3 percent among black teens, and more than 1 percent among whites and Hispanics.

“Over the same 10 year period that that study covers, if you pulled out that segment living in poverty, that their birth rate never declines,” said New Moms CEO Audalee McLoughlin. “In fact it doubles, and it’s over 60 percent.”

Despite society’s advances over the last few decades, the sad truth is, for teen moms, not much has changed. Two-thirds of them live in poverty; less than 50 percent graduate high school; and only 2 percent of girls who are moms by the age of 18 will graduate college by the age of 30.
