Abdulmutallab in 50 Minutes

The more we learn about his 'interrogation,' the worse White House policy looks.

The attempted Christmas Day destruction over Detroit of Northwest Flight 253 by Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab is fading from public memory as a fortunate near-miss. This incident should not fade from view. As more information emerges, the picture it paints about the antiterror mindset of the current U.S. government is—there is no other word—scary.

Last week in these columns, we discussed Director of National Intelligence Dennis Blair's Congressional testimony on the Abdulmutallab case. This was Mr. Blair's famous "duh" remark about the government's failure to invoke the new High-Value Detainee Interrogration Group (HIG) to question Abdulmutallab. A remarkable Associated Press story this past weekend makes clear that "duh" was mainly another word for disgust inside the intelligence bureaucracy over what happened that day in Detroit.

Here, compressed, is AP's account of how Abdulmutallab was handled after the plane landed. Read it and weep.

He was taken to the hospital by U.S. Customs agents and local cops, to whom he babbled that he was trying to blow up the plane.

Agents from the FBI's Detroit bureau were called in about 2:15. He "spoke openly" and admitted he was from al Qaeda in Yemen. Under a Miranda exception meant to let officials find out fast if another bomb is imminent, the agents didn't issue the standard self-incrimination warning. He talked for 50 minutes. Then, to let the suspect's medications wear off, the interrogators stopped.

Five hours later, the FBI in Washington said it wanted a new interrogation team to do a second interview. This new group of FBI interrogators is called a "clean team."

If airplane terrorists are going to be treated like pickpockets by the government and not probed deeply for further information, there's really no longer a reason for passengers on such planes to NOT KILL THE TERRORISTS.

It simply continues some level of risk to keep the terrorist alive after he is subdued, and eliminates that risk if someone will simply step on his throat for 15 minutes or so.

Whether the terrorist is dead, or he's Mirandized, he's of no more intelligence value, yet the individuals on the aircraft do improve their relative situation by disposing of him.

Those on the plane who might object to this prophylaxis themselves risk death at the hands of the other passengers.

Was this an interrogation hour on a union clock?

See? They made very great hay about how he babbled non-stop, but mainly that took place in mainly non-FBI situations...!

For FIVE HOURS (during which time OTHER aircraft would have been coming in) the FBI could have been running the fool, and THEY CHOSE NOT TO. They are STILL not being honest about this.

And that was because of this hyperLegal mindset —”If he blabs while under medication, will we be said to have chemically TORTURED him..?”

See?

This is a hyperLegalistic, PC, bureaucratized mindset, and it is completely 9-10 in orientation.

In short: Their greedy little claws are latched onto the tiller, but our creeky little raft IS GOING OFF A WATERFALL.

Why didn’t they keep interrogating him while he was medicated?

Because the accusations against the US military regarding GITMO were fresh in their minds, and they wanted to protect their own PC fannies, “Let those crazy allegations be said about Gitmo marines...WE are smarter than that, WE know the routine, and WE’ll be damned if we’ll let that happen to US...!”

So in short, the FBI cared more about their own reputations than they did about actual US security.

The same people who raised such an outcry over Guantanamo, and filed lawsuit after lawsuit so that the Bush administration could not proceed with trying the terrorists in timely fashion, are now running the show.

They act as if they think the terrorists will only go after Republican-populated targets. Even if they were to get such a promise from the terrorists themselves, it would be crazy to trust the terrorists to abide by their promise.

Eric Holder is worse than Janet Reno. She was corrupt and partisan, but more oblivious to the dangers to the security of the US than consciously trying to put us in jeopardy.

We all know one of these Islamic nutjobs is going to blow up another plane eventually. Those deaths will now all be on Obama’ head. I can’t believe how utterly stupid this administration is.

Obama administration hopes for that to happen so they can declare martial law. They WILL do it because these are the same people who populated the Clinton White House and looked for ways for BillyBobClinton to stay in office longer. He had Bruce Lindsey pouring over legal documents looking for loopholes to allow him a third or more term. These are the same folks, just a different puppet on the string (Obama).
