NASA will not be getting the $1 billion budget boost civil space advocates had hoped to see when President Barack Obama sends his 2011 spending proposal to Congress Feb. 1, requiring the U.S. space agency to make even tougher than expected choices about the future of its manned space program, according to sources with close ties to the administration. These sources declined to reveal the fate of NASAs planned Ares 1 crew launch vehicle, which many observers see as a likely cancellation target, but they did say the budget proposal would fund a multibillion-dollar effort to foster development of commercial systems for ferrying astronauts to the international space station.
An independent panel concluded this past summer that NASA could not afford to develop the Ares 1 and a crew carrying capsule dubbed Orion without a significant budget increase, which the sources said is not in the offing for 2011
Meanwhile, Obama will request budget increases for environmental satellites, education programs, and research and technology development, these sources said.

Guess NASA shouldn’t have killed off DC-X.
I really liked the concept of the Delta Clipper
Sigh, maybe they could save a billion by getting rid of James Hansen and his Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) that seems about to face a scandal similar to CRU.
They need to cut more into their budget.
no more manned space flight ... it will be phased out in favor of environmental systems and science.
Project Earth Skin by Cisco is the surveillance system of systems and will monitor all human activity including health
There will always be manned space flight but either at a reduced cost or they need to spread the cost around. This includes letting private companies in.
no there will not be ... it is over.....
Private companies such as Microsoft,Apple and other technical companies have so much to offer. If NASA does not let private companies share the burden, then NASA is officially out of business. It beats giving the Russians the technology and hitching a ride on their Soyuz rockets.
there will be no exceptionalism by america....... and manned space flight is exceptional... it is all going the earth sciences, robotic planetary sciences. 800b over 20 yrs. It is in the decadel report from the nsf IT HAS BEEN THE PLAN SINCE o GOT IN OFFICE.
they need to pay for the new satellites and their launch, along with new robots, usa man is earth bound.
Manned space flight for the USA is dead. the Greens won their battle in the NASA and want their due...
No budgets, no rockets, commercial lift is a joke for manned space flight just kill a bunch of folks. Robots will take over at no risk....... and cheaper....
Until china walks on the moon we are earth bound.
On the other hand, have the military take over NASA. In Russia and China their space programs are part of the military.
the air force should at least they would get something done..
Why not? It seems to work for the Russians,Chinese and Indians that their military controls everything from exploration to scientific satellites.
“Cisco has inked a deal with NASA to build a new global system for tracking climate change. Dubbed ‘Planetary Skin,’ the network platform will connect a number of sensor and recording units throughout the planet in an effort to gather data for monitoring and tracking changes to the global climate. The company plans to begin building the system next year with a program called ‘Rainforest Skin’ which will track both climate change and deforestation in rainforest environments. Eventually, the company plans to take the system throughout the planet and create a global network of data-collecting systems for the project. A podcast and a video explain the project in further detail.”
The new NASA: all global warming, all the time!
Maybe Hollywood should stop spending billions on “special effects” and start creating real ones.
Wouldn’t a billion just get a satellite into space or something?
and just when Obama was trying to sound pro-NASA he pulls the football away
