A defence contractor will voluntarily stop stamping references to Bible verses on combat rifle sights made for the US military.
In a statement released yesterday, Trijicon said that it is also providing free modification kits to remove the references from the telescopic sights already in use. The Marine Corps has purchased more than 200,000 Trijicon sights and the Army has bought about 100,000. The British Army is also using them in Afghanistan.
The references to Bible passages raised concerns that they break a government rule that bans proselytising by American troops in Afghanistan and Iraq.
A spokesman for US Central Command said initially that the Trijicon sights did not violate the ban and compared the references on the sights to the "In God We Trust" inscription printed on US currency.
On Thursday, however, General David Petraeus, Central Commands chief officer, called the references disturbing".
This is a serious concern to me and the other commanders in Iraq and Afghanistan, he told an audience at the Centre for Strategic and International Studies in Washington.

Wonder if they'll have a sale? I'd like to help them out but I'd have to buy another rifle that fits underneath it. Hmmmm......
Yea, though I walk through the valley of darkness, I will fear no evil, because I am the meanest son of a bitch in the valley.
That’s right. It wasn’t some idiot muzzie who kicked up this fuss, it was MICHAEL WEINSTEIN, from the very dishonstely named, “Military Religious Freedom Foundation”. http://wwww.mrff.org
He was a USAF J.A.G. puke who worked —of all people— for Ronald Reagan, then made some bucks in the private sector suing folks for Ross Perot. Then he retired at from 2006 and has for the past 4 years been waging Secular Jihad against men who treacherously fight muslim folks who throw acid on girls and say Jews are monkeys (don’t ask me).
Sounds crazy huh? He’s overweight, ugly, angry, and other bad stuff —things you can see from the news broadcast clips he has at his website:

Yes, while we are out trying to head off armageddon or widespread terror, this guy choses to focus on stuff that’s written on rifles. Yes.
What would be ironic about that? And the last thing you see before pulling the trigger on someone's 'brains' would be his head not the Bible verse.
I’d like to see the count of how many soldiers using the sights will actually request the modification kits to remove the verses. If they have a say in the matter.
Hey...as long as we don’t turn in folks like Hassan...where’s the problem!!
or "Kill the Press"
My thoughts exactly. PC the military and us to death. The man’s father, who started the business, did this years ago. I wonder who ran mouth?
It would be ironic in that you were going to shoot an anemy after reading from a religious tome, which would infer a book of peace, but then you would kill an innocent. I realise one wouldn’t actually see the verse when aiming, I was speaking more figuratively than literally.
The Bible has no prohibition on honorable service up to and including killing. Killing in war is peacemaking for the US. If you missed and killed an ‘innocent’, as there was no intent, there is no condemnation. There is no irony possible for a Christian soldier in this context.
It seems that we have different views as to what is ironic...
ironic ain’t it.
The difference between belief and not.
I agree. Our beliefs, I’m sure, differ.
