LOS ANGELES – Air America Radio, a radio network that was launched in 2004 as a liberal alternative to Rush Limbaugh and other conservative commentators, on Thursday shut down abruptly due to financial woes.
The network once boasted hosts such as Al Franken and Rachel Maddow, but struggled from the outset, including multiple management shake-ups, a bankruptcy in 2006 and sale for $4.25 million the following year.
Air America ceased airing new programs Thursday afternoon and said it will soon file to be liquidated under Chapter 7 bankruptcy. It began broadcasting reruns of programs and would end those as well Monday night.
"The very difficult economic environment has had a significant impact on Air America's business. This past year has seen a `perfect storm' in the media industry generally," the company said in a statement on its Web site.
The New York-based network said its "painstaking search for new investors" came close to succeeding even this week, "but ultimately fell short."

How they were not regulated under campaign laws, I don’t know. They existed not to make a profit, but to promote a political agenda while SPENDING MONEY....the literal definition of a campaign ad. You may ask if conservative talk radios would fit this, I say no. They make a profit by selling advertising. When they go bankrupt, they go out of business, not exist by donations.

Prepare for the monopoly of conservative talk radio. Maybe the FCC would revoke Air America’s broadcasting license, but it would force it to operate as a pirate radio station.

After hearing that Air UnAmerican was filing for protection, I turned to the frequency of what was their
affiliate. They were still broadcasting, and he said that, it didn’t make any difference that the network was going out of business. He said that Rhodes and Schulz et al were still going strong, and that the demise of Air UnAmerican wasn’t going to make any difference at all. They could still carry on.
Who needs a liberal “alternative” when all the MSM channels are farther left than Limbaugh is right? If potential Liberal audience were inquisitive enough to seek out information, they wouldn’t remain Liberal.
