Air America, the long-suffering progressive talk radio network, abruptly shut down on Thursday, bowing to what it called a very difficult economic environment.
The chairman of Air America Media, Charlie Kireker, said in a statement that the company would file under Chapter 7 bankruptcy to carry out an orderly winding-down of the business.
In a troubled time for advertising-driven media businesses, our painstaking search for new investors has come close several times right up into this week but ultimately fell short of success, Mr. Kireker said.
The closing did not come as a surprise. Air America, which began six years ago and has 100 affiliated stations, cycled through a number of owners and never found its financial footing. It first filed for bankruptcy protection in 2006 but managed to stay on the air.
The fact of the matter was, it was always a very challenging business proposition, and it never had the right management, said Sam Seder, who hosted programs on Air America until last year.

Dang, it has been a GREAT week!!!
bu-bye
Best week in a looooong time.
With barely a whimper.
Tough days for liberal rat weasels.
If a liberal radio network falls in a forest, and no one cares, does it make a sound?
Ha ha ha...banner week for the liberals. The clips on O’Reilly (Howie Dean and Chrissy Matthews) and Hannity tonight (the malevolent Arlen Sphincter being beyond rude to Michelle Bachmann) show that they are coming so unglued that Elmer’s has added a third shift.
Liberals say the same thing about communism. It was a great idea, they just didn't have the right leader.
They're using the Obama Economy as the reason for their demise while Rush Limbaugh flies his G550 all over the country to play Golf. LOL
So far, this has been a wonderful week, torrential rains and all.
Wow, Christmas continues!
Get a clue, Mr. Seder. It never had anything but bad ideas; ideas that portend against good business.
I read that rather than following the successful formula of the conservative talk show hosts whose broadcasts get picked up by existing radio markets, Air America went around buying up radio franchises in metro areas all over the country.
They tried to make a little government out of liberal talk radio and financed the infrastructure to support it, rather than just producing a product for licensing to the existing marketplace.
That right there shows you the difference in mindset between liberals and conservatives, with the predictable results.
There are all kinds of fools that got left holding the bag on millions of unpaid debts from Air America, and now the Air America hosts have all left for new jobs at MSNBC.
Meanwhile, Rush Limbaugh makes a thousand dollars every time he blinks.
The fact of the matter is....No one wants to listen to the whiney negative attack speak that lib personalities have to spew. Note the prime time ratings in Fox vs. pMSNBC as another example.
Good points. As I recall also, when the idea of Air America was being floated, there were no radio stations that wanted to carry it (knowing that it wouldn't bring the listener base which translates into revenue) so they resorted to "buying time" like an infomercial. It was the only way that they could get on the air. Whereas conservative talk is something people are attracted to listening to.
The libs just couldn't fight the trends nor work within. This, BTW also is what led to talk of bringing back the fairness doctrine. THe whiners just can't get it through their heads that no one wants to hear what they have to say.
they never learn
Not nearly long-suffering enough!
I can't wait until my next conversation with my lib "friends".
"I don't wish to hear what you have to say..."
