A little-noticed number in last week's Marist College poll on the Gillibrand-Ford situation suggests that Sen. Charles Schumer's national profile could be affecting his approval rating at home.
The poll had Schumer's negative rating at 42 percent, where it has been for months in Marist -- but his approval rating was at 51 percent, one of his lowest in that survey in recent years, and down from 58 percent in September.
"We're seeing some general erosion in his numbers," said Marist pollster Lee Miringoff, "from what's been a consistent mid- to high-50s. This is an electorate that's increasingly unhappy."
Insiders say Schumer is watching the national trend for any implications for himself -- and in a clear signal of anxiety, he was one of the first out of the box with a statement after the Massachusetts election acknowledging the anger among voters at the ruling party.
After years acting as a nonpartisan figure, Schumer tone has become increasingly partisan, and as he's become more a of a senior figure in Washington -- which could leave him without a firewall against national voter anger against the ruling Democratic party.
It's just one poll, and two other surveys have his numbers higher:
Quinnipiac University and Sienna College have his approval over 60 percent -- but for a veteran poll-parser and political obssesser like Schumer, the numbers could be a flag.
"There is a sense that .... his focus has shifted to Washington," said one longtime New York Democratic insider. The insider acknowledged that Schumer is still doing as many small-bore Empire State pressers as he used to, but said there's a growing sense that he's focused on national issues.
New York's senior senator is the No. 3 Democrat in the Senate, and some believe he's eyeing a higher position.

Erode, erode, erode...
I hope that NY takes this unique opportunity to elect not one, but TWO republican Senators!
When he stands behind Reid,he has everthing be the knife
in his hand!
Video of Chucky - addressing the *chattering classes* (that would be us) saying that the American people don’t care about PORK! He’s a pig;)

I thought Americans weren't "ruled" we were led, or governed, or served by, not RULED! That's for monarchies and dictatorships, not republics.
Schumer is one arrogant ba$tard I would LOVE to see go down in November. I hope and pray the momentum overruns him as well as Gillebrand.
Schumer tries to hide behind the curtain but he is the string puller of the democrats. He’s behind the filibustering of judges, the tipped the first domino in the housing crisis with his open letter which resulted in the the dissolution of IndyMac (in my view, he cause an economic crisis on purpose so the democrats would be elected), and he’s behind all the health care deals and the flouting of rules.
If the people of NY are becoming wise to his shenanigans, I’m happy to hear it. His seat is up this year too. Maybe Giuliani will reconsider!
He is not at all happy this time, by the teabagging his party just got.
Schumer is one of the most grating and unappealing personalities in Congress. Forget his politics, most elected officials are at least a little bit LIKEABLE. t’s a mystery to me how his favorables are even HALF that high.
“...If the people in New York are becoming wise to his shenanigans...”
The people in New York LOVE his shenanigans. (He’s “fighting” for them, dontcha know. Why is it that Democrats always use war words?)
IMHO
The senior senator of my home state is the worst senator in United States history...
WTF?????? This partisan hack has been a dedicated foe of President Bush and an Obama butt-boy.
WTF?????? This partisan hack has been a dedicated foe of President Bush and an Obama butt-boy.
I hope my fellow NYer’s don’t blindly pull the lever this time and i further hope someone actually runs against him.
He defines everything wrong with our govt,in place too long, sense of entitlement, acts like royalty.
You have the right idea, the story has the reality.
Memo to our "masters": YOU'RE NEXT! And by the way, DAMN YOU!
Bush b!tch slapped the donk for that Indy Mac letter. I agree w/ you. They started this, wanted it, had the press sell it.
Chuck Shumer is one mean and evil SOB. I will never forget his contemptuous treatment of the families of the people who died at Waco.
This piece of slime has been around for a long time and he is very influential in the Democratic Party. It will be a great day for America when this piece of garbage exits the political scene.
I'll trade you a Lautenberg for that Schumer!
