British soldiers in Afghanistan are to be issued with guns inscribed with references to passages from the Bible - risking handing a propaganda victory to Muslim extremists.
The sights for the Sharpshooter assault rifle, bought this week to boost the fight against the Taliban, are etched with the characters JN8:12.
This is a reference to chapter 8 verse 12 in the book of John, which reads: 'When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life".'

Heh. They can have the propaganda “victory” but a clean head-shot is always preferable.
All the U.S. forces using the sights could count on being shielded from criticism, praised for diversity, promptly promoted up through the ranks . . . .

Why this verse and not “I have not come to bring peace, but a sword”? Might this be an abbreviation for something else that coincidentally looks like a bible reference?

What a great idea - Biblical references inscribed on scopes. Now we should also add them to the barrels and perhaps the stocks. The truth is the truth, no matter what the detractors say about it.
They're just going to have to quit hyperventilating about stuff like this. They would probably stroke out if they saw all the long-haul trucks, laundromats, and 7-11s with Bible verses and little fish symbols around here.
