EUGENE, Ore. -- Sarah Palin will speak at the Eugene Hilton on April 23, according to Dr. Bill Young, chairman of the Lane County Republican Party.

The dinner and speech will not be open to the public. Lane County Republicans plan to mail invitations to volunteers, donors and precinct committee people in Lane County. Proceeds will go to support the Lane County Republican Party.

About 750 tickets will be available. If there is still room available, they will make tickets available to Republicans in other counties.

Palin recently became a commentator on Fox News. She stepped down as governor of Alaska last year short of completing her first term in office. In 2008, she ran for vice president as Sen. John McCain's running mate against then-Democratic Sens. Barack Obama and Joe Biden.

Talk about going in the lion’s den. She better watch out, somebody might throw a Birkenstock at her.

The only other place in Oregon that is more liberal would be Ashland.

Be safe Sara. Oh, and that smell....it is Eugene hippies.

I don’t think you can really get more liberal than Eugene. Having grown up very near there I can say it is “Granola City” USA.

Gee, Eugene? Talk about going into the belly of the beast!

Perhaps she will speak at Evergreen State College or at Reed soon too?

I think eco-terrorists are the "new hippy".

Portland may have Eugene beat on anarchists though.

>>> Talk about going in the lion’s den. <<<

They will throw more than Birkenstocks.

Eugene has an active and virulent anarchist group. They were the prime movers behind the 1999 World Trade riots in Seattle. They are a nasty bunch and still very active.

I went to Portland last Spring and saw one of the street kids there, living like a bum on the sidewalk, with an iBook.

This should start a few buildings on fire. Reminds me of the time Rush Limbaugh spoke at Humboldt State on his early Tour to Excellence and the children of the anti-war crowd got wind of it but his speech went on. The next time he came to Eureka his sponsors had to rent the Eureka Municipal Auditorium. Packed house each time...

Believe it or not, Eugene is a hotbed of big Republican donors.

I grew up there, but that was a couple decades ago.

I remember growing up having Dad point out a guy on the street and saying "Look son, there's nothing more useless than an aging hippy."

Well ya know that generation - the more bohemian type - is mostly gone with only the few late boomers remaining.

What we have now is a pop culture thing - all about the scene. What were the elements of hippiedom (if that's a word) have been fetishized, leaving the Merry Pranksters and their ilk spinning in their graves. They are but consumers to a very capitalist industry, and by way of example I give you the Oregon Country Fair (or Renaissance Faire if that is how you remember it), the annual gathering where thousands come from around the country to buy hippie stuff.

Leftie-progressives all (or at least most), but real hippies would be ashamed of them just the same.

Can you do me a favor.
Give me the directions to McDonalds Theater again.

You will be going South on I 5.

Your last shot was good but we did not go and will be going again in a couple of days.
